Ferrari Elettrica Unveiling Sparks Investor Concerns Amidst Ambitious Electrification Plan

MILAN, Italy — Luxury sports car manufacturer Ferrari made headlines Thursday by unveiling the advanced powertrain and chassis for its first-ever fully electric production vehicle, dubbed the Ferrari Elettrica. However, the anticipated debut was overshadowed by a significant downturn in investor confidence, marking Ferrari’s worst trading day since its 2016 public listing. Shares plunged a notable 15% on both the Milan Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange.

Despite this market reaction, the Italian marque simultaneously announced an upgraded financial outlook for 2025, projecting increased revenues even in the face of new global 15% tariffs on foreign car imports to the United States. This divergence highlights a complex narrative for the company as it navigates the transition to electrification.

A Refined Vision for Electrification

Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna remained tight-lipped on specific production targets or pricing for the Elettrica, which is slated for deliveries commencing in late 2025, with its full design reveal expected in the spring of that year. The Elettrica is poised to attract a new segment of buyers, building upon Ferrari’s 15 years of electrification research, which famously began with Formula 1 technology integrated into the limited-edition La Ferrari hybrid supercar in 2013.

Crucially, Ferrari is committed to preserving its signature ‘sports car feel’ in its electric offerings. The Elettrica will feature accelerometers on the rear axle to capture and amplify powertrain vibrations, mimicking the iconic roar of its internal combustion predecessors. Drivers will also have the ability to select five distinct power levels via steering wheel panels, designed to provide a sensation of continuous, exhilarating acceleration. Furthermore, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and internal control, Ferrari will manufacture most critical components, including the battery system and software, in-house. The vehicle’s chassis and body shell will incorporate 75% recycled aluminum, a move expected to save 6.7 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per vehicle.

Strategic Pivot in Production Mix

The company also outlined its updated five-year plan, signaling a notable recalibration of its electrification strategy. By 2030, Ferrari’s product lineup is now projected to consist of 40% core internal combustion engines, 40% hybrid models, and 20% fully electric vehicles. This marks a significant reduction from its 2022 announcement, which had initially targeted a more ambitious 40% electric share for its lineup. This revised strategy, which includes an average of four new model launches annually and a focus on lower volumes per model, aligns with a broader industry trend where other luxury automakers have also scaled back their electric vehicle production plans to meet evolving market demand.

Robust Financial Projections Amidst Skepticism

Financially, Ferrari painted a positive picture for the short and long term. For the current year, the company anticipates revenues to exceed 7.1 billion euros (approximately $8.2 billion), an increase from its previous guidance of over 7 billion euros. It also targets earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of 2.7 billion euros, with a margin surpassing 38.3%.

Looking further ahead, under its new five-year plan stretching to 2030, Ferrari projects net revenues of an impressive 9 billion euros, alongside an EBITDA of at least 3.6 billion euros and robust 40% margins.

Despite these strong financial figures, the market’s reaction suggests a degree of investor apprehension. Citi analyst Harald Hendrikse commented that Ferrari’s outlook fell below even ‘lower growth’ estimates, characterizing the projections as conservative. This sentiment contributed to the substantial dip in share value, underscoring the delicate balance Ferrari must strike between innovation, financial ambition, and investor expectations in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
