Appeals Court Upholds Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX Fraud Conviction, Affirming 25-Year Sentence

Sam Bankman-Fried’s Conviction and 25-Year Sentence Affirmed by Appeals Court

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal appeals court in Manhattan on Friday upheld the conviction of cryptocurrency mogul Sam Bankman-Fried, dismissing claims that his 2023 fraud trial was unfair and reinforcing his 25-year prison sentence.

Appeals Court Finds “Robust” Evidence of Fraud

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals stated that the government’s evidence was “conservatively stated, robust,” concluding unequivocally that Bankman-Fried had defrauded FTX customers and investors of billions of dollars. The court underscored how he publicly reassured customers about the safety of their funds while clandestinely diverting billions for his personal enrichment. These ill-gotten gains were used to finance opulent real estate, substantial political contributions, and various investments, all meticulously hidden through falsified business records.

The Catastrophic Collapse of FTX

FTX, once valued at over $32 billion and celebrated as the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency exchange, experienced a dramatic downfall in November 2022. This catastrophic event resulted in an estimated $11 billion deficit, with customers facing approximately $8 billion in losses, investors losing $1.7 billion, and lenders being shorted by $1.3 billion.

From Crypto Star to Convicted Felon

Bankman-Fried, who was 34 at the time of his conviction, had a meteoric rise within the crypto universe. He testified before Congress and secured endorsements from high-profile celebrities, including NFL quarterback Tom Brady, NBA point guard Stephen Curry, and comedian Larry David. However, his empire ultimately crumbled under the weight of his fraudulent activities.

During Bankman-Fried’s sentencing, U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan sharply criticized the entrepreneur’s trial testimony, describing it as “often evasive, hair-splitting, dodging questions,” and concluding that he had repeatedly committed perjury on the witness stand. Judge Kaplan emphasized the immense financial devastation caused by Bankman-Fried’s actions, rejecting any credit for potential future recoveries by victims.

Legal Outcome Solidified

After hearing oral arguments, the three-judge panel, led by Judge Barrington D. Parker, definitively rejected the defense’s argument that the trial was compromised by the judge’s rulings limiting evidence. This decision solidifies the legal outcome of one of the most significant cryptocurrency fraud cases in recent history.
