Meta Secures Landmark Nuclear Power Deals to Fuel Ambitious AI Expansion

Meta Forges Landmark Nuclear Deals to Power AI Data Centers

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has announced a series of significant agreements with three leading nuclear energy providers—TerraPower, Oklo, and Vistra—to power its rapidly expanding artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. These landmark deals are set to supply up to 6.6 gigawatts of new and existing clean energy by 2035, a monumental undertaking equivalent to illuminating approximately 5 million homes.

Addressing the Insatiable Energy Demand of AI

The move underscores the enormous energy demands of advanced AI operations, particularly for Meta’s flagship Prometheus AI data center in New Albany, Ohio. This 1-gigawatt cluster, a critical infrastructure for the tech giant’s AI ambitions, is anticipated to become operational as early as this year. With the burgeoning need for powerful computing, securing a reliable and carbon-free energy supply has become paramount for tech behemoths like Meta.

Strategic Partnerships for a Sustainable Future

Collaboration with TerraPower: Accelerating Advanced Nuclear Development

Under one of the undisclosed financial agreements, Meta will provide funding to TerraPower, a nuclear innovation company co-founded by Bill Gates, to accelerate the development of two new Natrium units. These advanced nuclear reactors are projected to generate up to 690 megawatts of firm power, with initial deliveries expected by 2032. Furthermore, Meta has secured rights for energy from up to six additional Natrium units, targeting a substantial 2.1 gigawatts by 2035, significantly bolstering its long-term clean energy portfolio.

Securing Existing Nuclear Capacity with Vistra

In another strategic pact, Meta will acquire more than 2.1 gigawatts of power from two of Vistra’s operational nuclear plants in Ohio. The agreement also includes energy from planned expansions at these Ohio facilities and from a third Vistra plant located in Pennsylvania, ensuring a diversified and robust nuclear power supply.

Innovating with Oklo: A New Power Campus for Data Centers

The third deal involves a collaboration with Oklo, a company backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, to develop a substantial 1.2-gigawatt power campus in Pike County, Ohio. This innovative facility will directly support Meta’s growing cluster of data centers in the region, highlighting a commitment to next-generation nuclear technology.

Building on Existing Clean Energy Commitments

These latest initiatives build upon Meta’s ongoing efforts to transition to clean energy sources. The company had previously signed a 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy in June, further demonstrating its sustained investment in sustainable power solutions for its global infrastructure.

Broader Impact: Strengthening America’s Nuclear Supply Chain and Economy

Beyond powering its own operations, Meta emphasized that these projects will play a crucial role in strengthening America’s nuclear supply chain. They are expected to create and sustain numerous jobs in the construction and operation of advanced American power plants, contributing to both national energy independence and economic growth, all while advancing Meta’s ambitious net-zero emissions targets.
