Jesy Nelson Reveals Heartbreaking Diagnosis for Twin Daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, Battling Severe SMA Type 1

Jesy Nelson Reveals Twin Daughters’ Devastating SMA Type 1 Diagnosis

London, UK – In a deeply personal and emotional revelation, former Little Mix sensation Jesy Nelson, 34, has disclosed that her 8-month-old twin daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, have been diagnosed with a severe form of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1. The singer shared the heartbreaking news in an Instagram video on Sunday, January 4th, detailing the grueling journey she and her fiancé, Zion Foster, 27, have endured over recent months.

A Glimpse of Joy Before the Battle

Just months before the public announcement of their challenging diagnosis, Jesy Nelson and Zion Foster proudly introduced their twin baby girls to the world. They appeared on the ‘This Morning’ TV show, sharing their joy and the early days of parenthood with Ocean Jade and Story Monroe.

Ocean Jade and Story Monroe were born prematurely at 31 weeks on May 15, 2025. Nelson recounted that upon their discharge from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, she was advised against comparing her daughters’ development to other babies due to their early arrival. However, as the weeks progressed, alarming signs began to emerge. The twins exhibited significantly less movement in their legs than expected and struggled with proper feeding, prompting increasing concern from their parents.

The Diagnosis: SMA Type 1

“After the most grueling three, four months, and endless appointments, the girls have now been diagnosed with a severe muscular disease called SMA type 1,” Nelson tearfully explained in her video. Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a rare, inherited neuromuscular disorder characterized by the progressive weakening and wasting away of muscles. This occurs due to the loss of specific nerve cells in the spinal cord crucial for controlling muscle movement. SMA Type 1 is the most severe form, accounting for 60% of all SMA diagnoses, with symptoms typically manifesting within the first six months of a baby’s life.

The prognosis shared with Nelson and Foster was devastating. She revealed breaking down upon hearing that her daughters would “most likely be disabled” and would probably “never gonna be able to walk” or “regain their neck strength.” The medical advice was clear: immediate treatment is paramount to give the girls the best possible chance. Without treatment, SMA Type 1 drastically reduces life expectancy, often to just two years of age.

A Mother’s Fight and Acknowledgment of Timely Intervention

Nelson expressed profound gratitude that her daughters received timely intervention, acknowledging that without it, they might not have survived. The diagnosis has transformed her role, compelling her to become a dedicated “nurse” for her children. “In the space of two weeks of getting their diagnosis… I have to put them on breathing machines and do lots of stuff that no mother really should ever have to do on their child,” she shared, highlighting the intense and demanding care required.

Despite the immense challenges and the heartbreak of “grieving the life I thought I was going to have with my children,” Nelson remains a beacon of hope. “I have to be grateful because at the end of the day, they’re still here and that’s the main thing and they’ve had the treatment,” she affirmed. “And I truly believe that my girls will defy all the odds and, with the right help, they will fight this.”

Raising Awareness and Unwavering Support

Nelson’s decision to share her family’s private struggle publicly serves a crucial purpose: to raise awareness among other parents. She stressed that “time is of the essence” in diagnosing SMA, urging any parent who notices similar symptoms in their infant to seek immediate medical consultation, as early detection can be life-saving.

Zion Foster echoed Nelson’s sentiments, resharing her video on his Instagram Stories alongside a new photo of their resilient twin daughters. His caption, “Still smiling through all the challenges. Daddy loves you so much,” underscored the couple’s united front and unwavering love in the face of adversity.
