Nicole Richie Rules Out Reality TV Return Despite Reunion with Paris Hilton
Hollywood icon and fashion designer Nicole Richie, 44, has definitively stated she has no intentions of returning to unscripted television, despite a recent celebratory reunion with former costar Paris Hilton. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Richie clarified her position, signaling a clear departure from the genre that propelled her to global fame in the early 2000s.
From “The Simple Life” to Stardom
Richie’s rise to stardom began with “The Simple Life,” a groundbreaking reality series that premiered in 2003. Alongside her real-life best friend Paris Hilton, then 22, Richie embarked on a comedic journey away from their privileged lives. The show, which ran for five seasons until 2007—the first three on Fox and the latter two on E!—documented the socialites undertaking unexpected blue-collar jobs across America, providing both outrageous humor and a fascinating cultural commentary. Its immense popularity not only cemented Richie and Hilton as pop culture fixtures but also spawned numerous international remakes and spinoffs.
A Firm Stance on Future Projects
“I did the reunion because it was the 20-year anniversary, and it felt right,” Richie explained to PEOPLE, speaking from the grand opening of FASHIONPHILE’s new flagship store at ROW DTLA in Los Angeles. She elaborated on the decision to revisit her reality TV roots, stating, “It felt like something that we both wanted to do, and that was so fun. But I have no plans for that in the future.” This statement firmly closes the door on a sustained return to the format.
“Paris & Nicole: The Encore”
The reunion Richie referred to was “Paris & Nicole: The Encore,” which debuted in 2024 on Peacock, more than a decade after “The Simple Life” concluded. The limited series saw the duo, both now 44, attempting to produce a unique operatic performance inspired by “Sanasa,” their memorable self-coined phrase from their original reality show.
Family’s Initial Skepticism
Interestingly, the journey into reality television for both stars was initially met with resistance from their families. In a Glamour interview last year, Paris Hilton revealed, “Our parents did not want us to do it and told us not to. It was the first of its kind.” Paris’s parents are Kathy and Rick Hilton, while Nicole was adopted at age 9 by music legend Lionel Richie and Brenda Harvey Richie. However, the initial skepticism quickly dissolved after the show’s premiere. Paris recounted her mother’s enthusiastic response: “My mom called me, and she’s like, ‘This is the most hilarious show I’ve ever seen in my life. You and Nicole are incredible.’ She’s like, ‘I was wrong for once.'”
