Mexican Billionaire Fernando Chico Pardo Acquires 25% Stake in Banamex
A Bold Vote of Confidence in Mexico’s Economy
MEXICO CITY – In a pivotal move for Mexico’s financial landscape, billionaire Fernando Chico Pardo has acquired a 25% stake in Banamex from Citigroup for $2.3 billion. This substantial investment, announced just a day after the deal, is being hailed by Chico Pardo as a robust vote of confidence in Mexico’s economic potential and its governmental policies.
Citigroup’s Strategic Divestment and “Mexicanization” Sentiment
The transaction stems from Citigroup’s broader strategic decision, declared in January 2022, to divest from its retail banking operations across Latin America. This move opened the door for potential local buyers, a development keenly observed by former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. At the time, López Obrador publicly expressed a desire for the bank to be “Mexicanized,” a sentiment rooted in concerns that foreign financial institutions often repatriate profits rather than reinvesting them domestically.
Synergy of Local and International Capital
Chico Pardo, a prominent figure in Mexican business, revealed that his active negotiations with the U.S. financial giant commenced approximately six months prior to the recent announcement. Emphasizing the synergy between local and international capital, he stated, “I believe that the foreign investment which is so necessary for our country must complement domestic investment.”
Banamex: A Historical Pillar of Mexican Banking
Banamex, a historic pillar of Mexican banking, was initially acquired by Citigroup in 2001. Under Citigroup’s stewardship, it flourished, growing into Mexico’s fourth-largest banking entity. Its extensive network boasts 1,300 branches and serves a vast customer base of 13 million individuals and businesses across the nation.
Fernando Chico Pardo: A Wealth of Experience
Fernando Chico Pardo brings a wealth of experience to this acquisition. He currently serves as the chairman of the board for Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR), a major airport operator managing nine airports in southeastern Mexico, including the primary hub in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and six airports in Colombia. He is also the president and CEO of Promecap, a distinguished private equity firm, and previously founded and managed a successful brokerage firm.
Future Outlook: Public Offering and Continued Leadership
Looking ahead, there are plans to eventually take the remaining portion of Banamex public. However, Fernando Chico Pardo is set to maintain his position as the principal shareholder, signaling a long-term commitment to the bank’s future under Mexican ownership.
