Matthew McConaughey Prioritizes Family Over Politics, Celebrates Generational Collaborations
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, acclaimed actor Matthew McConaughey, 55, has once again addressed his long-standing interest in public office, confirming that while a political future remains a possibility, his immediate priority is firmly rooted in his family. The Academy Award-winner, known for publicly exploring a run for governor in his home state of Texas, stated that any such endeavor would have to wait until his three children are grown and “out of the house as healthy individuals.”
Political Ambitions on Hold for Fatherhood
McConaughey, who shares Levi, 17, Vida, 15, and Livingston, 12, with his wife Camila Alves McConaughey, emphasized his commitment to fatherhood. “If I did that now, I wouldn’t be able to be the father and spend the time with the family the way that I have so far, and it’s something I’m not ready to sacrifice,” he told PEOPLE during a cover shoot. This stance echoes his decision in 2021, when he ultimately opted against entering the 2022 Texas gubernatorial race, despite significant speculation.
The actor revealed that he has been “looking into” the political arena for “probably six years,” continuously studying its demands and considering how he might be “useful in it.” However, he admits politics is “not necessarily my language” and that a run would only materialize if he felt an undeniable pull, a moment when he “couldn’t not do” it. With the 2026 election cycle now on the horizon, McConaughey’s timeline for a potential political pivot remains contingent on his children’s upbringing. “For now, I’m very secure with — the original thing I knew I always wanted to be was a dad,” he affirmed.
A Family Affair: “The Lost Bus” and PEOPLE’s Generations Issue
Beyond his political ponderings, McConaughey is currently engaged in significant family milestones within his acting career. He stars in Apple TV+’s upcoming survival thriller, The Lost Bus, premiering October 3. The film dramatizes the harrowing true events of the 2018 Camp Fire in northern California, which tragically burned over 150,000 acres and claimed 85 lives. In the movie, McConaughey portrays a steadfast bus driver tasked with rescuing 22 schoolchildren.
Notably, The Lost Bus marks a rare family collaboration. McConaughey’s 93-year-old mother, Kay McConaughey, makes her return to the screen after a 14-year hiatus, her last role being a cameo in the 2011 black comedy Bernie. Adding to the family affair, his eldest son, Levi, 17, makes his onscreen debut, portraying McConaughey’s son in the film. As Levi steps into the spotlight, Matthew McConaughey is actively guiding his son through the complexities of the entertainment industry. “I’ve tried to give him some tips that I’ve learned along the way,” McConaughey shared, stressing the importance for Levi to maintain a grounded perspective amidst the pressures of fame. “It’s important that he has his own ownership of who he is and becomes. And [acting] will be a part of that if he continues to do it, part of finding his identity, but it can’t be his full identity.”
