Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce, 35, has been slapped with a $14,491 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct following an “obscene gesture” he made during a high-profile NFL game on Sunday, September 14. The incident, which quickly went viral across social media platforms, occurred during the Chiefs’ matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles at their home turf, Arrowhead Stadium, in Kansas City, Mo.

The controversial moment unfolded after Kelce hauled in a 23-yard reception, a significant play that ignited the crowd and the player himself. In a burst of excitement, Kelce could be seen excitedly running down the Philly sideline and making a discernible motion towards his groin area. This act, deemed an “obscene gesture” by the league, falls under the NFL’s strict rules against unsportsmanlike conduct, which aims to maintain a standard of professionalism and respect on the field. While the fine represents a fraction of Kelce’s substantial NFL earnings, it underscores the league’s firm stance on player conduct. Kelce retains the right to appeal the fine through the official NFL process.

The game itself proved to be a challenging one for the reigning champions, with the Chiefs ultimately succumbing to a 20-17 defeat at the hands of the Eagles. This loss marked the Chiefs’ second of the season, coming on the heels of an earlier defeat against the Los Angeles Chargers. The disciplinary actions extended beyond Kelce during the intense contest; Eagles running back Saquon Barkley was also fined a significantly higher $46,371 for “impermissible use of the helmet/launching” after appearing to intentionally lower his helmet before bracing for impact with Chiefs safety Chamarri Conner. This disparity in fines highlights the varying degrees of penalties for different on-field infractions.

Kelce, a vocal leader for the Chiefs, had previously addressed the team’s early struggles. On the September 10 episode of his popular “New Heights” podcast, which he co-hosts with his brother, Jason Kelce, he took personal accountability for the team’s performance in their prior loss to the Chargers. “I know it’s kinda sounding like a broken record from last year’s Super Bowl, but that’s on us as leaders,” Kelce stated. “I’ll take the most accountability myself. I wasn’t ready for that first drive.” His candid remarks underscore his dedication to the team’s success, even as he navigates personal disciplinary actions from the league. PEOPLE reached out to representatives for Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs for comment on Sunday, September 21, but did not receive immediate responses regarding the fine.
