The horrific incident occurred on August 30 in Chadbourne, North Carolina, when the home of Patrick Ellis and his five daughters was engulfed in flames. The fire claimed the lives of his four youngest girls: Kalani Rae, Kendall Xaiya, Josephina Renee, and Sophia Nachelle, who were between the tender ages of 2 and 7. Father Patrick and his eldest daughter, 11-year-old Willow, miraculously survived the blaze.
Upon learning of the profound tragedy, O’Neal, who has served as the Director of Community Relations for the Henry County Sheriff’s Office since 2021, immediately contacted Sheriff Reginald Scandrett. The NBA Hall of Famer expressed a deep personal connection to the devastating event. “It touches every one of us parents, neighbors and human beings,” O’Neal told Fox 5. “These were innocent lives full of promise, taken far too soon…this was not just a gesture of support, it was a moral responsibility.”
Sheriff Scandrett echoed O’Neal’s sentiments, emphasizing the collective grief felt by the community and the law enforcement agency. “It’s tragic beyond belief. Particularly being a father of two girls and two boys, this is unconscionable,” Scandrett stated. “The loss the Ellis family has endured is one that shakes us all to our core. Our goal is to remind them they do not walk this journey alone.”
The joint donation from O’Neal and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office has been confirmed to “fully cover the expenses associated with honoring the girls,” according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office.
