Portland Trail Blazers Sale Finalized: Team Remains in Portland Under New Ownership
PORTLAND, Ore. — The long-anticipated sale of the Portland Trail Blazers has taken a significant step forward, with the estate of late Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen formally reaching an agreement to sell the NBA franchise to a prominent investment group led by Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon. The deal, which solidified a tentative agreement announced last month, ensures the Blazers will remain rooted in Portland, a key point for fans and the city alike.
Financial Details Emerge for NBA Franchise Sale
While specific financial terms of the formal sales agreement were not publicly disclosed by the Allen estate on Friday, earlier reports from ESPN pegged the valuation at approximately $4 billion. This figure, though substantial, places the Trail Blazers below the record-setting $6.1 billion sale of the Boston Celtics earlier in March, providing a benchmark for the current market for NBA teams. The sale represents an extraordinary return on investment from Allen’s original purchase of the team in 1988 for a mere $70 million.
Meet the New Ownership Group
The investment consortium assembled by Tom Dundon, a 53-year-old Dallas-based financier with a proven track record in professional sports ownership, includes several notable partners. Among them are Portland-based Sheel Tyle, co-founder of the investment firm Collective Global; Marc Zahr, co-president of Blue Owl Capital; and the Cherng Family Trust, the family office and investment arm behind the popular Panda Express restaurant chain. Dundon himself became the majority owner of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes in 2018 after initially buying a stake in 2017, demonstrating his commitment to and experience in sports management.
NBA Board of Governors Approval Awaited
The path to finalization now leads to the NBA Board of Governors, who must ratify the purchase agreement before the transaction can officially close. The closing is anticipated by the end of this year, signaling the conclusion of an era for the franchise under the stewardship of the Allen family.
Paul Allen’s Enduring Legacy and Philanthropic Vision
Paul Allen, a visionary billionaire who co-founded Microsoft alongside Bill Gates, acquired the Trail Blazers 36 years ago, shaping its trajectory and impact on the Pacific Northwest. Following his passing in 2018 at the age of 65 from complications of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, his sister, Jody Allen, assumed the roles of chair for both the Trail Blazers and the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, also a Paul Allen acquisition, and serves as a trustee of the Paul G. Allen Trust. A crucial directive in Paul Allen’s will stipulated the eventual sale of his beloved sports teams, with the proceeds dedicated to his extensive philanthropic endeavors, underscoring his lasting commitment to societal betterment.
Future of Other Allen Estate Assets Remains Uncertain
While the Trail Blazers sale moves forward, the Allen estate has yet to announce any definitive plans regarding the sale of the Seattle Seahawks or its 25% stake in Major League Soccer’s Seattle Sounders, leaving the future ownership of those assets an open question.
