Venice Acclaim and Emotional Intensity Mark Anticipated Drama’s Journey to Theaters
Los Angeles, CA – The highly anticipated biopic *The Smashing Machine*, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt, has already begun to stir significant buzz, not only for its compelling narrative but also for the profound emotional and physical toll it took on its leading actors. During a candid post-screening discussion at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles on Thursday, September 11, Johnson, 53, and Blunt, 42, offered a raw look into the making of a pivotal and intensely traumatic scene.
The film, directed by Benny Safdie, delves into the turbulent life of real-life mixed martial arts (MMA) and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) pioneer Mark Kerr, portrayed by Johnson. It navigates Kerr’s triumphant “glory days” in the octagon, his subsequent struggles with addiction, and the volatile relationship with his now ex-wife, Dawn Staples, played by Blunt.
One particular confrontation between their characters left both stars deeply shaken. Johnson recounted the moment he pinned Blunt’s character to the ground, a scene that resonated far beyond the physical demands he was accustomed to from his professional wrestling career. “I used to throw around 300-pound men for a living in the wrestling ring, or I’d get my ass kicked really. So I’m used to breaking physical space and holding on,” Johnson explained.
However, the experience of depicting domestic trauma proved uniquely impactful. “But when I held Emily in that scene and I grabbed her, and we went immediately down to the floor… I’ve never felt anything like that in my life,” Johnson confessed. He articulated the profound emotional weight, adding, “To hold another human being, a woman, and the last place she wants to be is to be held. What women who go through that kind of trauma, it really emotionally rocked me. I’ll never forget that.” The scene’s intensity was so potent that the entire production team required 90 minutes to recover afterwards, with Johnson stating, “We were spent after that, by the way. Completely exhausted.”
Blunt echoed her co-star’s sentiments regarding the scene’s challenges. “I get very scared before those scenes because I think you know you’re going to have to kind of go elsewhere with an intensity that is like how, when, in what way?” she shared, emphasizing the untechnical, raw nature of the performance. “There was nothing technical around us, so it really was just screaming at each other in the kitchen.”
For Johnson, embodying Mark Kerr was a role he had been “waiting” for, a chance to “not only push myself, but then just really go for it.” His long-standing acquaintance with Kerr, coupled with director Benny Safdie’s “incredible vision,” solidified his commitment. The opportunity to work alongside one of his closest friends, Emily Blunt, also played a crucial role. Blunt, in turn, expressed her delight, calling Johnson “truly my most enormous friend.” She praised his transformative performance, stating, “To watch him completely disappear, and just in this immersion, it was just one of the more moving experiences of my career, of my life, watching this happen. It was such a dream.”
The film has already garnered significant critical acclaim, including “extraordinary” praise for Johnson and “sensational” reviews for Blunt at its Venice Film Festival premiere, where it received a remarkable 15-minute standing ovation, reportedly moving Johnson to tears.
