Terrifying Turbulence: Delta Flight Incident Leaves Dozens Injured
On July 30, a Delta Air Lines flight bound for Amsterdam from Salt Lake City plunged into severe turbulence over Wyoming airspace, resulting in a terrifying ordeal that left numerous passengers and crew members injured. A recent National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) preliminary report provides a vivid and unsettling account of the incident, revealing how unbuckled individuals were violently propelled into the cabin ceiling and then slammed back to the floor.
The Harrowing Encounter
The Delta flight, operating with the seatbelt sign reportedly off, encountered the unexpected severe turbulence for a harrowing 2.5 minutes. Pilots had previously adjusted their route in an attempt to circumnavigate impending storms, yet the aircraft, a trans-Atlantic jet carrying passengers and crew, was unexpectedly caught in the most intense part of the weather system. During the chaotic episode, drink carts and unfastened passengers alike were thrown about the cabin. Passenger Leann Clement-Nash recounted the fear to ABC News, stating, “They hit the ceiling, and then they fell to the ground. And the carts also hit the ceiling and fell to the ground and people were injured. It happened several times, so it was really scary.”
Aftermath and Injuries
The immediate aftermath saw the flight diverting to Minneapolis. Upon landing, paramedics evaluated 24 individuals, with 18 ultimately requiring hospitalization for their injuries. Among the crew, two sustained serious injuries, while five others suffered minor injuries, underscoring the severity of the forces unleashed inside the aircraft.
NTSB Report Details Extreme Forces
The NTSB report detailed the extreme physical forces endured by those aboard. Passengers experienced gravitational forces reaching up to 1.75 times their normal body weight. Aviation safety consultant Jeff Guzzetti, a former NTSB and FAA investigator, explained the intensity: “That’s a lot of force. That’s like a muscle man grabbing you by the shoulders and with all of his strength trying to pull you up.” He added that such forces would feel like “an eternity” over 2.5 minutes. Additionally, the plane’s wing dipped dramatically, by as much as 40 degrees at one point, a maneuver that Guzzetti said would undoubtedly have caused alarm among passengers.
The preliminary report highlights that the pilots had disengaged the seatbelt sign, and flight attendants had begun beverage service just before the plane entered the turbulent zone. Despite the pilots’ efforts to re-route, NTSB analysis of the flight path overlaid with National Weather Service radar data revealed the aircraft flew directly into a “bright red section” on the map, indicating the most severe part of the storm. The NTSB’s ongoing investigation will scrutinize whether the pilots and crew took sufficient measures to evade the weather and assess the judgment involved in deactivating the seatbelt sign prior to the unexpected encounter.
Turbulence and Climate Change: A Growing Concern
While serious injuries from in-flight turbulence remain relatively rare, scientists caution that such incidents may become more frequent. Climate change is believed to be altering global weather patterns, including the jet stream, which could contribute to an increase in unpredictable and severe clear-air turbulence events, making adherence to seatbelt warnings more critical than ever for passenger safety.
