Actor Derek Dixon Breaks Silence on $260 Million Lawsuit Against Tyler Perry
Actor Derek Dixon has publicly elaborated on his motivations behind filing a staggering $260 million sexual harassment lawsuit against entertainment mogul Tyler Perry. Speaking exclusively to ABC News on Tuesday, September 9, Dixon broke his silence, explaining the extensive financial and personal damages he alleges, alongside his broader aim to hold a powerful figure accountable.
The Financial and Ethical Stakes
“Part of that number is my lost job, my lost income, the loss of a show,” Dixon stated during the interview. He emphasized that the substantial sum also serves as a critical “deterrent for how do you stop a billionaire who won’t stop themselves from doing this.” The lawsuit, initially filed in June, accuses Perry, 55, of sexual harassment.
Dixon, known for his role as Dale in Perry’s popular series The Oval and Ruthless, claims his professional relationship with Perry began after their first meeting in 2019. His appearances across both shows spanned from 2021 and were projected to continue through 2025, indicating a significant and potentially long-term career trajectory that he alleges was abruptly derailed.
Perry’s Legal Team Responds
However, Tyler Perry’s legal team has vehemently denied Dixon’s allegations. Matthew Boyd, an attorney representing Perry and TPS Production Services, issued a sharp rebuttal to PEOPLE, asserting, “This is an individual who got close to Tyler Perry for what now appears to be nothing more than setting up a scam. But Tyler will not be shaken down and we are confident these fabricated claims of harassment will fail.”
The Emotional Toll and Broader Mission
For Dixon, the decision to pursue legal action and speak out publicly has been fraught with difficulty. He shared with ABC News’ Linsey Davis the profound emotional weight of the situation: “It’s been hard. It’s a vulnerable thing to talk about, I think, for anybody. There’s a lot of shame, I think, around it.” He further reflected on the internal struggle, “Just trying to think what you could have done better and having to deal with the judgment of what, you know, everyone might think of how you could have handled it better without being in that situation.”
In a separate email interview with The Hollywood Reporter in July, Dixon had already characterized the lawsuit as “terrifying” but affirmed his resolve, stating he “couldn’t just let him get away with this.” His ultimate goal, he articulated, extends beyond his personal case: “Everyone deserves to go to work and do their job without their boss trying to have sex with them. My goal is to help ensure that the next generation of actors and creatives don’t have to choose between their dreams and their dignity.” The $260 million lawsuit formally requests a jury trial to adjudicate these serious allegations.
