Orlando Bloom Hints at Legolas Return for ‘The Hunt for Gollum’
Actor Expresses Interest in Reprising Iconic Elven Role Amidst New Middle-earth Adventures and Diverse Projects
Orlando Bloom, the 48-year-old English actor celebrated globally for his portrayal of the nimble elven archer Legolas Greenleaf, has openly expressed his interest in reprising the iconic role. Speaking on the Today Show on Friday, September 5, Bloom addressed the burgeoning excitement surrounding the upcoming “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” slated for a December 17, 2027 theatrical release. While he admits to not having “heard a peep, actually” regarding an official invitation, his affection for the character and the franchise remains undeniable.
Bloom first brought Legolas to life in Peter Jackson’s groundbreaking “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, beginning with “The Fellowship of the Ring” in 2001. His performance quickly endeared him to millions, contributing to the films’ monumental success, which collectively garnered 17 Academy Awards, including a historic Best Picture win for “The Return of the King” in 2004. Such was his impact that Jackson personally requested Bloom’s return for “The Hobbit” prequel trilogy a decade later, further cementing his place in Middle-earth lore. “It’s such an amazing part,” Bloom reflected, adding, “I’m so grateful to have been a part of those movies.”
The new venture, “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” plunges deeper into J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantastical world, with acclaimed actor-director Andy Serkis at the helm, who will also star as the titular, tormented character. The film, produced by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, has sparked fervent speculation among fans about the return of other beloved characters. Bloom, known for his candidness, humorously quipped, “Listen, I’d hate to see anyone else play Legolas, you know what I mean? What are they going to do? Are they going to put somebody else in as Legolas?” He even lightheartedly acknowledged the advancements in technology, stating, “With A.I. they can do anything these days!”
Bloom’s sentiments are echoed by other Middle-earth veterans. Legendary actor Sir Ian McKellen, 86, who masterfully embodied Gandalf, recently fanned the flames of anticipation. At the “For the Love of Fantasy” event in London, McKellen teased, “I hear there’s going to be another movie set in Middle-earth, and it’s going to start filming in May… It’s going to be directed by Gollum and it’s all about Gollum, but I’ll tell you two secrets about the casting… There’s a character in the movie called Frodo and there’s another character called Gandalf.” This strong implication of Elijah Wood (Frodo) and McKellen’s own return has significantly heightened the possibility of a grand reunion of the original fellowship, making Bloom’s potential comeback all the more plausible.
While the world awaits news from Middle-earth, Bloom has been busy with diverse projects.
This year, he starred in “The Cut,” a demanding role as a boxer obsessed with extreme weight loss. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, saw Bloom undergo a significant physical and mental transformation. He shared with PEOPLE the profound “mental toll that this kind of intense discipline takes,” describing “the paranoia and anxiety” caused by sleep deprivation due to hunger. Beyond “The Cut” and “Deep Cover,” Bloom is also slated to appear in upcoming films “Bucking Fastard” and “Wizards!”, showcasing his versatile career trajectory.
