Margot Robbie, the acclaimed actress and powerhouse producer behind LuckyChap Entertainment, has offered an electrifying glimpse into Emerald Fennell’s upcoming adaptation of Emily Brontë’s enduring 1847 novel, Wuthering Heights. During a recent interview with MTV’s Josh Horowitz, the 35-year-old star enthusiastically declared the film to be “bananas” – even more so than Fennell’s critically divisive 2023 hit, Saltburn.
“Just you wait,” Robbie teased, punctuating her statement with an emphatic thumb jab upward in a clip shared to Instagram. “It’s bananas. It’s great. It’s brilliant.” The comment instantly sparked a buzz of anticipation, especially given the darkly comedic and often shocking nature of Saltburn, which also starred Jacob Elordi. When fellow interviewee Colin Farrell playfully inquired about a trailer, Robbie, ever the professional, remained tight-lipped: “I can’t say nothing,” the Australian star quipped. She did, however, hint at a “sneak peek soon,” further fueling speculation.
Fennell, known for her distinctive directorial style evident in Promising Young Woman (2020) and Saltburn, is set to bring her audacious vision to one of literature’s most iconic and tempestuous love stories. Wuthering Heights, originally published under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, is a haunting tale of passion, revenge, and social stratification set against the desolate Yorkshire moors. Robbie is cast as the headstrong Catherine Earnshaw, while 28-year-old Jacob Elordi, who recently garnered acclaim for his role in Saltburn, will embody the enigmatic and brooding Heathcliff.
Production glimpses have already offered tantalizing hints of the film’s aesthetic. In March, set photos circulated, showing the Barbie Oscar nominee adorned in an elaborate wedding gown, complete with a waist-cinching corset – a striking visual that promises to capture the period drama’s essence while hinting at Fennell’s signature dramatic flair. The ensemble cast also includes Shazad Latif, Hong Chau, Alison Oliver, Charlotte Mellington, and Emmy-nominee Owen Cooper.
The film is a significant project for LuckyChap Entertainment, the production company co-founded by Robbie and her husband Tom Ackerley. LuckyChap has an impressive track record, having been instrumental in the success of the cultural phenomenon Barbie in 2023, which grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide, and the provocative Saltburn. While anticipation builds for Wuthering Heights, Robbie continues her prolific output. She is set to star alongside Colin Farrell (49) in the romantic fantasy A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, scheduled for a September 19 theatrical release. Farrell himself has a busy slate, with Ballad of a Small Player hitting select theaters on October 15 and Netflix on October 29, and a reprisal of his role as the Penguin in Matt Reeves’ The Batman sequel. Robbie also confirmed ongoing efforts to adapt Ottessa Moshfegh’s acclaimed 2018 novel, My Year of Rest and Relaxation, for the screen.
