Trump Media Expands Crypto Footprint with New Digital Asset Treasury and CRO Investment
Donald Trump’s media enterprise, Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG), the parent company of the Truth Social platform, is significantly expanding its footprint in the cryptocurrency market. The company announced a major new venture: the formation of a digital asset treasury firm, “Trump Media CRO Strategy,” in partnership with cryptocurrency exchange Crypto.com and a blank check company associated with Yorkville Advisors.
This strategic move, unveiled on Tuesday, positions TMTG to acquire and hold substantial amounts of CRO, Crypto.com’s native token. Trump Media has committed to an initial purchase of $105 million worth of CRO. According to Yorkville Advisors, the total expected funding for this new treasury is ambitious, targeting $1 billion in CRO holdings, which represents approximately 19% of the token’s current market capitalization. This will be bolstered by an additional $420 million in cash and equivalents, and supported by a $5 billion line of credit, totaling an anticipated $6.42 billion in potential digital and traditional assets.
The establishment of “Trump Media CRO Strategy” aligns with a burgeoning trend in the crypto world, where an increasing number of companies, often from diverse sectors with no prior direct ties to digital assets, are making cryptocurrency acquisition and retention a central part of their business model. This trend gained significant momentum and credibility with MicroStrategy, a business intelligence firm that began purchasing Bitcoin in 2020, subsequently witnessing a dramatic surge in its stock price.
Devin Nunes, Chairman and CEO of Trump Media, articulated the company’s vision, stating, “Companies of all sizes and sectors are strategically planning for the future by establishing digital asset treasuries anchored by assets that have created a comprehensive value proposition and are poised for even greater utility.”
The announcement had an immediate positive impact on the CRO token, which saw its price jump by approximately 30% on Tuesday morning, reaching 21 cents per token. Despite this recent surge, CRO remains significantly below its all-time high of nearly 97 cents, achieved in 2021.
Beyond the treasury, TMTG also revealed plans to integrate Crypto.com’s digital wallet infrastructure into Truth Social, aiming to introduce a “rewards system” for its users. This initiative suggests a deeper integration of crypto functionalities within its social media platform.
A Rapidly Expanding Crypto Portfolio
This latest venture is part of a broader, aggressive expansion of the Trump family’s involvement in the cryptocurrency space. Since leaving office, former President Trump has consistently advocated for crypto-friendly regulations, while his family has actively pursued various crypto-related business endeavors. This unprecedented intertwining of political influence and personal financial interests in the nascent crypto sector has drawn allegations of corruption from Democratic critics, though Trump maintains he has delegated the management of his business dealings to his sons.
The Trump crypto empire now includes a diverse array of projects:
- Meme Coin Launch: In a notable move, Trump launched his own meme coin just days before taking office. Top investors in this digital asset were later rewarded with an exclusive dinner hosted by the former president in May.
- Crypto-Themed Merchandise: Supporters have also been able to purchase premium crypto-themed Trump merchandise, including luxury watches priced at $100,000 and high-end sneakers.
- Previous TMTG Crypto Plans: Prior to the CRO treasury, Trump Media had already unveiled plans to hold a substantial amount of Bitcoin on its balance sheet and to create an exchange-traded fund (ETF) linked to the prices of five popular cryptocurrencies.
- World Liberty Financial: Launched last year by Trump and his sons, this cryptocurrency company has attracted significant investments from an investment fund in the United Arab Emirates and from Justin Sun, a prominent China-born crypto entrepreneur. Sun himself faced a lawsuit from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2023, alleging market manipulation and undisclosed celebrity promotions by his company, a lawsuit which the SEC has since paused.
- ALT5 Sigma’s Involvement: The lesser-known firm ALT5 Sigma recently announced its intention to raise $1.5 billion to acquire digital coins created by World Liberty Financial. Further cementing family ties, Eric Trump, the former president’s son, is joining ALT5 Sigma’s board.
- Meme Coin ETF Proposal: Also on Tuesday, Canary Capital filed paperwork with the SEC, seeking approval for an exchange-traded fund that would specifically track the price of the president’s meme coin.
The rapid proliferation of Trump-branded and Trump-family-linked crypto projects underscores a strategic pivot towards digital assets, aiming to capitalize on both the former president’s fervent supporter base and the volatile, yet potentially lucrative, cryptocurrency market.
