Sterling K. Brown Reveals Son’s Poise Amid Racist Taunt on Soccer Field

Sterling K. Brown Shares Profound Lessons from Son’s Poise in Face of Racial Abuse

In a candid revelation, acclaimed actor Sterling K. Brown, 49, recently shared a deeply personal account of an incident involving his eldest son, Andrew, 14, during a youth soccer game. The three-time Emmy winner, known for his roles in This Is Us and the Hulu series Paradise, spoke openly at a roundtable discussion for the second season of Paradise, emphasizing the profound lessons he gleaned from his son’s remarkable composure in the face of racial abuse.

A Son’s Wisdom: De-escalation on the Soccer Field

Brown recounted the distressing episode, which began when another young player spat on Andrew during the game. Andrew, instead of retaliating, calmly approached the referee to report the offense. However, without a direct witness, the referee was unable to take action. The situation escalated further after the game when the same opponent confronted Andrew and verbally assaulted him with a racial slur.

Upon learning of the incident from Andrew after the game, Brown admitted his initial, visceral reaction was one of anger and a desire for immediate retribution. “I was like, ‘Yo, man, how come we didn’t beat his ass?'” Brown confessed, highlighting a stark contrast to his son’s measured approach. Andrew’s response, however, offered a profound lesson in de-escalation and emotional intelligence. His son explained, “Because that wouldn’t have solved anything. He already did what he was going to do. The ref didn’t respond to it or whatnot. So I didn’t want to make you any more upset, which is why I didn’t tell you until after the game.”

This mature and “evolved” handling of a volatile situation by Andrew, who along with his 9-year-old brother Amaré, Brown notes, has never been in a fight, deeply impacted the actor. Brown acknowledged, “So he’s a more evolved person than me. I would’ve beat his ass!” The incident served as a poignant moment of parental pride, showcasing Andrew’s ability to navigate complex social challenges with a wisdom beyond his years.

Fatherhood: The Most Important Job

Beyond this challenging experience, Brown consistently emphasizes that fatherhood is unequivocally “the most important job that I have in my life right now.” He spoke with palpable delight about witnessing his children, Amaré and Andrew, grow, accrue new skills, and learn new words, describing it as “the most magical thing to be in the presence of.”

This dedication to his family has profoundly influenced his career choices. Brown detailed the sacrifices involved in his demanding profession, recalling how filming away from home for projects like Voltron in Australia, a movie in France, and another in Louisiana, meant missing precious moments like tucking his children into bed or finishing the seventh book of the Harry Potter series with his youngest. His aspiration for the next nine years is to consistently work in Los Angeles, allowing him to be a more present father and avoid missing “too much of their growing up.”

Ultimately, Brown finds immense satisfaction in observing his sons’ development, particularly Andrew’s burgeoning maturity and compassion. He views this as a testament to progress, stating, “That’s all you can do is try to do a little bit better than what your parents did for you. And hopefully he’s able to do a little bit better as well.” This sentiment underscores a universal hope for parents: to raise children who not only thrive but also embody a greater sense of understanding and empathy in the world.
