Laila Ali: From Boxing Ring to Culinary Arena – And Back as Host!
Laila Ali, a name synonymous with undefeated boxing championships and formidable athleticism, is no stranger to intense competition. Yet, even for a multi-title-holding champion, the culinary arena presented an unexpected and formidable challenge. The retired professional boxer, daughter of legendary Muhammad Ali, recently revealed that her appearances on Food Network’s “Chopped” pushed her to her limits, labeling it “one of the hardest things” she’s ever undertaken. Now, Ali is channeling her competitive spirit into a new role: host of the rivalry-based cooking competition, “Chef Grudge Match.”

During an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Ali recounted moments during her two seasons on “Chopped”—and even a turn on “Beat Bobby Flay”—that nearly had her “throwing in the towel.” The “mystery baskets” of “Chopped” are designed to test culinary ingenuity, but for Ali, two specific ingredients stood out for their sheer daunting nature. “There have definitely been some [challenges where] I was just like, ‘Man, I wouldn’t want to have to work with that,’” she admitted.
The Laila Ali Lifestyle founder vividly recalled confronting a “smoked pig’s head, the whole head” in one basket. “I don’t even eat pork like that…So I’m like, ‘What am I supposed to do with this?'” she recounted, highlighting the personal and professional hurdle. Another basket presented an equally formidable task: “They gave me two baby lambs that needed to be butchered.” This particular challenge momentarily stunned the seasoned competitor. “I was stunned for like three minutes before I could even figure out what to do,” Ali confessed, adding the pressure of her competition: “I just looked to my left, because at that point, I was competing against a Chopped judge, an Iron Chef [Scott Conant]. I was totally out of my weight class.”
Despite the profound initial shock and the feeling of being outmatched, Ali’s innate competitive drive took over. Observing her professional chef opponent, she quickly adapted. “There’s always something, but there’s a way to overcome. Just got to stay focused,” she affirmed. Her perseverance paid off, as Ali ultimately emerged victorious in her “Chopped” seasons, adding culinary champion to her impressive list of accolades.
From Contestant to Commander: Hosting “Chef Grudge Match”
While her days of battling bizarre basket ingredients are behind her, Ali is far from leaving the competitive kitchen scene. She now commands the new Food Network series, “Chef Grudge Match,” where her experience facing high-stakes culinary challenges will undoubtedly inform her perspective as host.

“Chef Grudge Match” pits two rival chefs against each other in intense, head-to-head culinary showdowns. The stakes are significant: a $10,000 cash prize, the losing chef’s most coveted knife, and lifelong bragging rights are on the line in each episode. This format promises to deliver compelling drama and high-level cooking, guided by Ali’s steady presence.

I’m going to take my wins and go home.” Fans eager to witness Laila Ali’s return to the culinary spotlight can tune into “Chef Grudge Match,” which premieres on August 12 at 9 p.m. ET on Food Network.
