Preliminary findings suggest a gas valve failure during the flushing process led to a buildup of pressure and the subsequent ignition of highly combustible coke oven gas.

The powerful blast, which heavily damaged a section of the sprawling industrial facility, occurred around a set of ovens where coal is baked at intense temperatures of approximately 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit (648.89 Celsius) to produce coke, an essential component in steel manufacturing. A dangerous byproduct of this process is coke oven gas, a lethal mixture primarily composed of methane, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide. According to U.S. Steel, pressure accumulated within a valve, causing it to fail and release this hazardous gas into the immediate area, where it then found an ignition source and exploded.

The sheer force of the explosion was evident across the region, sending a dark plume of smoke billowing into the sky, shaking the ground, and being heard by residents more than a mile away. The immediate aftermath was chaotic, with emergency responders working for hours to locate two missing workers amidst the charred wreckage and rubble. Tragically, one was found deceased, while the other was rescued alive.
