Melania Trump Seeks $1 Billion in Damages Amid Contentious Defamation Battle
Former First Lady Melania Trump has initiated legal action against Hunter Biden, demanding a $1 billion retraction and apology over comments he made in a recent interview. The dispute centers on a widely circulated claim that convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was instrumental in introducing Melania to her husband, former President Donald Trump. Biden has defiantly refused to retract his statements, intensifying the legal standoff.
The controversy ignited following an August 5th interview with Andrew Callaghan, posted on YouTube, where Hunter Biden repeated a biographer’s assertion that Epstein facilitated the initial meeting between the Trumps. This claim, attributed to author Michael Wolff and reportedly dating back to 2019, suggests a connection that Mrs. Trump vehemently denies.
In response, Mrs. Trump, 55, through her attorney Alejandro Brito, dispatched a stern letter to Biden, 55, on August 7th. The letter, obtained by Fox News Digital, demanded an immediate and full retraction of the “false, disparaging, defamatory, and inflammatory statements.” Brito emphasized the extensive dissemination of the video, noting its republication by numerous media outlets and political commentators, reaching “tens of millions of people worldwide.” Failure to comply, the letter warned, would lead to a $1 billion lawsuit to “recover the overwhelming financial and reputational harm” Mrs. Trump alleges to have suffered.
However, Hunter Biden remained unyielding. In a subsequent video with Callaghan released on August 14th, when pressed on whether he would apologize, Biden responded concisely: “F— that. That’s not gonna happen.” He defended his comments by citing Wolff’s biography and other reports, framing the lawsuit as a “distraction” from the larger implications of Epstein’s network. Biden further stated, “I don’t think that these threats of a lawsuit add up to anything other than a distraction because it’s not about who introduced whom to whom. I don’t know how that, in any way, rises to the level of defamation to begin with.”
Biden elaborated on his perspective, asserting, “But the fact of the matter is that this is about hundreds, if not thousands, of minors, children, who were raped by Jeffrey Epstein.” He challenged the Trumps, stating, “if they want to sit down for a deposition and clarify the nature of the relationship between Jeffrey Epstein, if the president and the first lady want to do that, and all of the known associates around them at the time that they met, I’m more than happy to provide them the platform to be able to do it.” He also characterized the legal threats as bullying tactics, suggesting the $1 billion figure was intended to intimidate him.
This isn’t the first instance of legal pressure from Mrs. Trump’s team regarding this specific claim. Her lawyers had previously targeted The Daily Beast, which published a story titled “Melania Trump ‘very involved’ in Epstein Scandal: Author,” also citing Wolff. The article was subsequently deleted in its entirety after legal threats. Similarly, political analyst James Carville issued an apology to the former First Lady after making comparable claims on his podcast.
In contrast to the disputed narrative, Melania Trump has publicly offered her own account of how she met Donald Trump. According to her best-selling memoir, “Melania,” released in October 2024, their first encounter occurred in September 1998 at the Kit Kat Klub in New York City during Fashion Week. She recounts that Donald Trump, then on a date with another woman, asked for her number. Mrs. Trump, however, declined to give him hers, instead requesting his. She contacted him a few days later, and the couple eventually married in January 2005.
Nick Clemens, a spokesperson for the former First Lady, reiterated her position, stating, “First Lady Melania Trump’s attorneys are actively ensuring immediate retractions and apologies by those who spread malicious, defamatory falsehoods. The true account of how the First Lady met President Trump is in her best-selling book, Melania.” The legal battle continues as both parties stand firm on their positions regarding the contentious claim and its implications.
