Appearing on the latest episode of Lily Allen and Miquita Oliver’s “Miss Me?” podcast, Ashton, 41, candidly clarified that despite her previous references to Hiddleston as her “husband,” the couple has not yet formally exchanged vows.
The “Marvels” star explained that the affectionate titles are a private form of address, a “semantic thing” born from the evolution of their relationship. “We’ve been engaged for a long time and there are, I think there have been publications that have named us husband and wife already,” Ashton shared on the podcast. This premature designation, she revealed, led to “awkward interactions” and even “toxic paragraphs” from loved ones who felt snubbed, mistakenly believing a secret wedding had occurred without their invitation. Ashton was quick to reassure them, stating, “No, no, no, it didn’t happen. We didn’t do it in secret. It’s just like a semantic thing.”

Ashton elaborated on the rationale behind their private terminology, noting that it simply “didn’t feel right” to continue referring to each other as “boyfriend” and “girlfriend,” particularly as their family expanded. The couple welcomed their son in October 2022, just months after PEOPLE confirmed their engagement in June of the same year. Ashton had first revealed her pregnancy to the world at a New York City screening for her film “Mr. Malcolm’s List” in June 2022.

For Ashton, the engagement period, which commenced with Hiddleston proposing in 2022, serves as a crucial “training ground” for the realities of marriage. “It is the practicing [of] calling each other husband and wife.
