NEW YORK (AP) — Former Vice President Kamala Harris is set to release a new memoir this fall, titled “107 Days,” which promises an in-depth, candid look at her groundbreaking 2024 presidential campaign. The book, slated for publication by Simon & Schuster on September 23, chronicles her journey from the initial launch of her bid to her historic ascension as the Democratic Party’s nominee.
A Candid Look at “The Shortest Presidential Campaign in Modern History”
Harris, in a video announcement released on Thursday, reflected on the intense period that defined her push for the nation’s highest office. “Just over a year ago, I launched my campaign for President of the United States,” she stated, referring to the initial phase of her 2024 run. “107 days traveling the country, fighting for our future — the shortest presidential campaign in modern history.” She added that since leaving office, she has spent considerable time reflecting, leading her to pen a “behind-the-scenes account” to share “what I saw, what I learned, and what it will take to move forward.”
Historic Nomination and Ultimate Defeat
The campaign she describes culminated dramatically in July, when she assumed leadership of the Democratic ticket following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race, an event that occurred in the wake of a highly scrutinized debate performance. This positioned Harris as the first woman and the first woman of color to head a major party presidential ticket in American history. Despite her historic nomination, she was ultimately defeated by Republican Donald Trump in the November general election.
“One of the Best Works of Political Nonfiction”
Jonathan Karp, CEO of Simon & Schuster, lauded “107 Days” as a pivotal contribution to political literature. While declining to reveal specific revelations, including Harris’s perspective on questions surrounding President Biden’s fitness for office, Karp affirmed that the memoir “addresses everything we would want her to address.” He further described the 320-page book as a “page-turning account” filled with “surprising and revealing insights,” calling it “one of the best works of political nonfiction Simon & Schuster has ever published” and “an eyewitness contribution to history and an extraordinary story.” Financial terms of the book deal were not disclosed.
Precedent and Future Speculation
This forthcoming memoir follows Harris’s 2019 book, “The Truths We Hold: An American Journey,” published by Penguin Books, which coincided with her earlier 2020 presidential primary campaign where she ultimately withdrew before the first primary contest. Her decision, announced Wednesday, not to seek the California governorship in 2026 maintains speculation about her potential presidential candidacy for 2028. Harris is scheduled to make her first post-election interview appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” Thursday night on CBS Television.
