Award-Winning Actor Prioritizes Team Celebration Over Immediate Recovery Following Painful Injury
Los Angeles, CA – Renowned actor Sterling K. Brown, 49, known for his compelling roles in “This Is Us” and currently, Hulu’s “Paradise,” has made a significant personal sacrifice, electing to delay surgery for a torn Achilles tendon to attend the upcoming 77th Primetime Emmy Awards. Brown, nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Agent Xavier Collins in “Paradise,” revealed his injury and his poignant decision in a candid Instagram video posted on Tuesday, September 9.
From his bed, keeping his spirits up by watching football and reading, Brown addressed his fans directly, stating, “It’s ya boy SKB, coming to you right now because I know I’m gonna have to have this conversation a bunch of times with a bunch of people. So hopefully, this will sort of condense the number of times that I’ll have to share some unfortunate news.” He then revealed the extent of his injury: “Ya boy just tore his Achilles tendon,” acknowledging that the recovery process “can take a little bit of time.”
The injury, which occurred while the actor was engaged in a casual athletic activity, caught Brown by surprise. He described taking a simple step when he suddenly felt “like somebody stomped on the back of my heel.” His immediate, humorous reaction was to demand an apology, only to realize no one was near him. He mused, “The injuries where nobody touches you are usually, probably the most serious ones.”
Despite the severity and the necessity of surgical intervention, Brown’s commitment to his colleagues trumped immediate medical care. “Gonna do it after the Emmys so I can motivate myself and go and try to celebrate with my cast and the producers of Paradise because we got recognized,” he explained.
“Paradise,” a political drama described as being “set in a serene community inhabited by some of the world’s most prominent individuals” whose tranquility “explodes when a shocking murder occurs and a high-stakes investigation unfolds,” has garnered significant industry recognition. Beyond Brown’s individual nod, the series secured three additional Emmy nominations: Julianne Nicholson for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series, James Marsden for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series, and the show itself for Outstanding Drama Series. Brown, a celebrated actor known for his energetic presence, acknowledged the upcoming challenge of attending the prestigious event while physically limited. “Most people who know me, if I’m not going to an event, I’m usually wearing some sort of athleisure wear or what-have-you, so if a game breaks out, Brown is ready,” he quipped, adding with a smile, “I got cleats in the back of the car.” This time, however, his athletic readiness will be on hold.
