NBC News White House Correspondent Shares Emotional Story of Natural Conception, Expanding Her Family
WASHINGTON D.C. — Yamiche Alcindor, the acclaimed NBC News White House correspondent, 38, is expecting her second child, a surprising and joyous turn of events for the journalist who openly navigated a challenging infertility journey for years. Alcindor and her husband, Nate, are set to welcome another baby boy, a revelation that comes after multiple rounds of in vitro fertilization (IVF) to conceive their first son, Yrie.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Alcindor shared the profoundly personal news, highlighting that this pregnancy is particularly special as it occurred naturally, a stark contrast to her previous experience. “During my last pregnancy with my son Yrie, I shared my tough journey dealing with infertility and multiple rounds of IVF over several years through the Today show,” Alcindor recounted. This year, the couple had begun preliminary testing, preparing themselves for another demanding IVF cycle in their desire to expand their family.
However, fate had an unexpected plan. Just before a planned trip to Jamaica — their first without young Yrie — Alcindor experienced symptoms of exhaustion and nausea. A pregnancy test taken on the morning of their flight delivered an astonishing result. “I screamed — literally screamed — when the words ‘pregnant’ popped up on the screen,” she revealed. The news was particularly overwhelming for Alcindor, who had never conceived naturally and believed it might not be possible after years of trying before Yrie. Her husband, Nate, initially startled, quickly shared in her disbelief and joy.
The surprise deepened after their vacation. A visit to their IVF clinic, where they expected to confirm a pregnancy of four to six weeks, revealed that Alcindor was, in fact, almost three months pregnant, well into her first trimester. “My entire first trimester had gone by without me noticing!” she exclaimed, describing their reaction as “beyond shocked and also overjoyed.”
Alcindor admitted to initial hesitation in sharing her story, acknowledging the pain such narratives can sometimes inflict on those struggling with infertility. “As someone who has dealt with infertility for years, I used to get sad when women would share stories about getting pregnant without really trying to conceive because it was a reminder that my body wasn’t doing what I so badly wanted it to do and it made me feel like I was failing,” she explained. Despite these feelings, she ultimately chose to share her experience with the hope of providing “deep lasting hope” to others on a similar path.
The news was met with overwhelming excitement from her loved ones. Alcindor’s mother, “fully obsessed” with Yrie, was “over the moon” and equally surprised, having been a constant source of support during her daughter’s long battle with infertility. Three-year-old Yrie, a “very social toddler,” is also eagerly anticipating the arrival of his sibling.
Amidst her demanding schedule covering the White House, Alcindor has been navigating the early stages of pregnancy, experiencing exhaustion and a notable craving for sweet treats. The family recently learned they would be adding another boy to their household. “I am feeling very blessed and very outnumbered in my household,” Alcindor quipped. She marked the occasion by playing “I Always Wanted a Brother,” a song from the upcoming 2024 film Mufasa: The Lion King, a playful nod to her hope for a loving sibling relationship, unlike the infamous Scar and Mufasa. Nate took a few minutes to grasp the song’s significance, but “joy fill[ed] his face” once he understood.
As she looks towards the months ahead, balancing motherhood, her forthcoming book, and her demanding journalistic career, Alcindor expresses feelings of excitement, blessedness, and groundedness.
