Prince Harry Ends Sentebale Affiliation Amid Bitter Leadership Dispute

The rupture follows months of public infighting, mass resignations, and significant staff cuts, which have severely impacted the charity’s financial stability and reputation. Sources close to Sentebale, speaking to The Times, indicated that any prospect of the 41-year-old Duke re-engaging with the charity has been “completely extinguished.”
A Vision Undermined: Sentebale’s Founding and Mission
Sentebale, meaning “Forget Me Not” in Sesotho, was established in 2006 by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho. Its creation was a deeply personal tribute to Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, and aimed to provide essential care, education, and psychological support to vulnerable children and young people affected by HIV/AIDS in Lesotho and Botswana. For years, the charity was a cornerstone of Prince Harry’s humanitarian efforts in Africa, reflecting his profound connection to the continent.
The Leadership Conflict and Public Exposure
However, the charity has been embroiled in a high-profile dispute that escalated earlier this year. Both Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso stepped down as patrons in March amidst a public disagreement with Sentebale chair Dr. Sophie Chandauka. Dr. Chandauka reportedly leveled accusations of bullying, racism, and misogyny against the Duke – allegations he has vehemently denied. The public nature of the feud drew sharp criticism from the Charity Commission, the independent regulator of charities in England and Wales. The Commission stated that the dispute had “severely impacted the charity’s reputation,” further compounded by an en masse resignation of trustees during the fallout.
Financial Woes and Operational Cuts
The leadership turmoil coincided with, and arguably exacerbated, a critical funding crisis for Sentebale. According to published accounts cited by The Times, the charity’s reserves plummeted dramatically in 2024. By December, the organization held just $278,000 after accounting for liabilities, a stark decline from approximately $2 million a mere 16 months prior. Sentebale itself acknowledged this figure was close to its minimum reserve level, issuing a grave warning that without significant new funding, its vital programs could shrink by the end of 2026.
This financial strain has led to widespread operational restructuring and redundancies. Reports indicate that roughly one in five employees in Botswana, including the country director, were laid off. In London, nearly all staff were dismissed in August. While local reports in Lesotho suggested the charity’s headquarters had been “effectively mothballed,” Sentebale has disputed this claim, maintaining that its Mamohato Children’s Centre remains fully operational.
The organization maintains that these significant cuts, which included a cost-saving plan aimed at reducing expenses by $1.3 million, were partly pre-planned. Specifically, redundancies in Botswana were reportedly mapped out as early as 2023, prior to the public eruption of the leadership dispute.
Prince Harry’s Stance and Regulatory Calls
In a statement issued to PEOPLE on January 2, a spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex confirmed that Prince Harry had made “multiple representations to the Charity Commission, setting out his concerns regarding Sentebale’s governance.” The statement further emphasized that, “in the interests of its beneficiary community,” Harry had urged “the appropriate regulatory bodies to maintain close oversight of the charity’s activities.” This suggests the Duke’s departure was also prompted by serious concerns about the charity’s internal management and accountability.
Looking Ahead: Sentebale’s Continued Mission
Despite the considerable turmoil and the loss of its royal co-founder, Sentebale insists it remains financially stable and committed to its mission. The charity aims to serve at least 78,000 children and young people across Lesotho and Botswana in 2025, matching or exceeding its impact from the previous year. However, the shadow of the acrimonious split and its financial repercussions undoubtedly casts a long-term challenge over the organization’s future endeavors and fundraising capabilities.
