Ed Sheeran’s Analog Surprise: How the Phone-Free Star Discovered Taylor Swift’s Engagement to Travis Kelce on Instagram

A decade-long friendship tested by modern communication — or lack thereof — led to an unconventional engagement reveal for the “Bad Habits” singer.

In an era dominated by instant digital communication, Ed Sheeran, the 34-year-old global music sensation, remains steadfast in his commitment to a phone-free lifestyle. This unique choice led to a charmingly human oversight when his longtime friend, pop icon Taylor Swift, 35, became engaged to NFL star Travis Kelce, 36, in August 2024. Sheeran revealed in a candid Access Hollywood interview, published on YouTube on Friday, November 29, that he first learned of Swift’s significant life event the same way millions of fans did: through an Instagram post.

Sheeran, who famously ditched his cell phone in 2015 to foster genuine connections and improve his mental well-being, admitted to the surprise discovery while promoting his new Netflix special, One Shot with Ed Sheeran. “My way of viewing it is like, me and Taylor are mates, and I will see her,” he explained. True to his word, the two superstars had a substantial “four-hour” catch-up session just a week after the news broke, a testament to their enduring bond. “I kind of feel like being in touch with everyone — sort of — you lose actual human connection,” Sheeran mused, highlighting the value he places on face-to-face interaction. “When I saw Taylor, we had like a four-hour catch-up and it’s life stuff, rather than… you know what I mean.”

Swift, for her part, offered a “perfect explanation” for the oversight during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon weeks after her engagement. “He doesn’t have a phone,” Swift told Fallon, acknowledging the quirky yet endearing aspect of their friendship. “And this is one thing I love about him. It’s very eccentric. Love it. But when I’m going through saying, ‘Hey, who should we call? Who should we FaceTime?’ I’m going through my texts and being like, ‘Who have I texted within the last like, month of my life?'” She elaborated on the logistical challenges, explaining that communicating with Sheeran often involves emails or coordinating a FaceTime call via an iPad. “This is one of my absolute favorite people on the planet,” Swift affirmed. “Then, when the news came out I was like, ‘Oh my God we forgot to call Ed! Oh no!’ He’s like family. I love him. But he doesn’t have a phone!”

The friendship between the “Bad Habits” singer and the “Red” songstress spans over a decade, beginning in 2012 when Sheeran served as the opening act for Swift’s monumental Red Tour. Their creative synergy blossomed into several collaborations, including the fan-favorite duet “Everything Has Changed” from the Red album, solidifying a bond that transcends industry pressures. “I’m not self-conscious about my relationship with her,” Sheeran stated, underscoring the authenticity of their connection. “We’ve been friends for very, very many years. We’re super close and we see each other when we see each other. When we see each other, we lock back into where we left off.”

Sheeran’s commitment to his phone-free life has only deepened. While he previously used an iPad for social media, he confirmed in the recent Access Hollywood interview that he has “actually got rid of the iPad as well.” He now primarily uses a laptop to check social media, further minimizing his digital footprint. This intentional disconnect, rather than hindering his relationships, seems to strengthen them, allowing for more meaningful and focused interactions, as evidenced by his extended conversation with Swift about her engagement.

As One Shot with Ed Sheeran continues to stream on Netflix, audiences worldwide get a deeper look into the artist’s life, including his unique approach to technology and friendships that remain grounded in authentic human connection.
