Actress Vanessa Hudgens, now 36, recently offered a candid look back at the casting process for the iconic Disney Channel movie High School Musical and the undeniable real-life sparks that flew between her and co-star Zac Efron. From Reluctant Audition to Disney Stardom
Recalling her teenage years, Hudgens revealed her initial skepticism about securing a role with Disney. “I guess I was 15,” she stated, noting a previous unsuccessful pilot, The Bus Life, with Keke Palmer, and numerous other auditions. “I was like, ‘It’s never gonna happen for me.'” When the High School Musical audition surfaced, her enthusiasm was notably low. “I don’t wanna go. I’m not gonna get it,” she admitted to the podcast host.
Despite her reluctance, Hudgens attended the audition, describing it as “normal” and recalling that she may have sung either Jessica Simpson’s “Angels” or “Reflection” from Disney’s Mulan, followed by a scene reading. During the intense callback process, actors were “mixed and matched with a bunch of people.” It was during one of these pairings that Hudgens first met Zac Efron. “I got mixed up and I think I got put with Zac [Efron] right away,” she recounted. The final callback saw Hudgens competing with one other actress for Gabriella and Efron with another actor for Troy. “We, like, swapped, mixed and matched. And that was it,” she explained. The pivotal call came shortly after, confirming her role. “I got the call, and they were like, ‘We want you to do it.’ And I was like, ‘Oh my god. It’s finally happening!'”
