U.S. Supreme Court Upholds $1.4 Billion Defamation Judgment Against Alex Jones
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday delivered a decisive blow to conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, rejecting his appeal and leaving intact the monumental $1.4 billion defamation judgment against him. The ruling stems from Jones’s decade-long campaign of lies, claiming the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a staged hoax.
The nation’s highest court, without comment or even requiring a response from the victims’ families, effectively ended Jones’s latest legal maneuver to escape accountability. The decision marks a significant victory for the relatives of the 20 first graders and six educators tragically killed in the Newtown, Connecticut, massacre, who endured years of harassment and threats fueled by Jones’s baseless claims broadcast on his Infowars platform. An FBI agent who responded to the shooting was also among the plaintiffs.
A Victory for Sandy Hook Families
Christopher Mattei, a lawyer representing the Sandy Hook families, lauded the Supreme Court’s action, stating, “We look forward to enforcing the jury’s historic verdict and making Jones and Infowars pay for what they have done.” This sentiment underscores the families’ relentless pursuit of justice against the Infowars host, who propagated the cruel falsehood that the victims’ loved ones were “crisis actors.”
The Road to a $1.4 Billion Judgment
Jones had argued that a judge erred in holding him liable for defamation and infliction of emotional distress without a full trial on the merits of the allegations. However, a Connecticut judge issued a rare default ruling against Jones and his company, Free Speech Systems (Infowars’ parent company based in Austin, Texas), in late 2021. This severe measure was a direct consequence of Jones’s repeated failures to comply with court orders and produce crucial evidence to the Sandy Hook families. Following this, a jury was convened solely to determine the damages owed.
In a landmark decision, the jury in Connecticut agreed on a $964 million verdict. The judge subsequently added another $473 million in punitive damages, bringing the total judgment against Jones and Free Speech Systems to approximately $1.4 billion. This judgment is one of the largest defamation awards in U.S. history.
Beyond the Connecticut case, Jones is also appealing a separate $49 million defamation judgment handed down in Texas. This case also involved parents of a Sandy Hook victim, with the damages awarded after Jones failed to provide requested documents during discovery.
Jones’s Reaction and Financial Woes
Reacting to the Supreme Court’s decision on his daily show, Jones claimed he had anticipated the outcome, attributing it to “politics” despite his lawyers’ belief that the case was “cut and dry.” He scoffed at the notion of possessing sufficient funds to pay the colossal judgment, stating that his studio equipment, including five-year-old cameras, was worth only about $304,000. Accusing his adversaries of attempting to “torture” and “harass” him and his family, Jones urged his listeners to purchase merchandise to keep Infowars operational.
Jones filed for personal bankruptcy in late 2022, and his legal team informed the justices that the “plaintiffs have no possible hope of collecting” the entire judgment. Efforts to liquidate Infowars’ assets to satisfy these judgments have been ongoing. A recent attempt to auction off Infowars’ assets saw the satirical news outlet The Onion named the winning bidder. However, a bankruptcy judge ultimately threw out the auction results due to procedural issues and concerns about The Onion’s bid. The process of selling Infowars’ assets has since been transferred to a Texas state court in Austin, which recently appointed a receiver to oversee the liquidation. Jones is appealing this latest order, while some of his personal property is also being sold off as part of his bankruptcy proceedings.
