Kentucky Sues Roblox, Alleging “Playground for Predators”
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky’s Attorney General Russell Coleman announced a significant lawsuit on Tuesday, accusing the immensely popular online gaming platform Roblox of becoming a “playground for predators” due to what he describes as inadequate child safety measures. The legal action, filed Monday in a state court by Coleman’s office, intensifies a national debate over digital platforms’ responsibilities in safeguarding their youngest users.
Calls for Stronger Protections
Coleman, a Republican, emphasized the urgent need for Roblox, which boasts 111 million daily active users globally, to implement more robust protections. He called for the installation of effective age verification systems, comprehensive content filters, and enhanced parental notification features to shield children and teenagers from potential harm on the platform.
A Parent’s Harrowing Testimony
Adding a poignant personal perspective, Kentucky mother of three Courtney Norris joined Coleman at the news conference. She recounted her initial misconception of Roblox as a safe digital environment for her children. “I came to realize, later than I would like to admit, that it actually is the ‘Wild West’ of the internet, targeted at children,’” Norris stated, underscoring the “illusion of safety it gives parents like me.” She added that policing the platform as a parent is “nearly impossible.”
Not an Isolated Incident
This lawsuit is not an isolated incident but rather the latest in a growing series of legal challenges against Roblox. Louisiana initiated a similar suit against the company in August, and Iowa filed a lawsuit following a harrowing case where a 13-year-old girl was allegedly introduced to an adult predator on the platform, subsequently kidnapped, trafficked across multiple states, and raped.
Allegations and Company Response
The Kentucky lawsuit paints a stark picture, alleging that despite the company’s assurances, Roblox has “failed to install basic safety controls” and neglected to inform users and their parents about “dangers inherent” on the platform. The legal filing specifically claims that children are exposed to “violent or sexual situations within the Roblox universe,” with numerous parents reporting instances of their children being contacted by strangers who then direct them to third-party chat applications, effectively bypassing Roblox’s internal communication safeguards.
In response to these grave allegations, Roblox on Tuesday issued a firm rebuttal. The company asserted its commitment to user safety, stating, “We have rigorous safety measures in place from advanced AI models to an expertly trained team of thousands moderating our platform 24/7 for inappropriate content.” While acknowledging that “No system is perfect and our work on safety is never done,” Roblox highlighted its continuous innovation, including the addition of “100 new safeguards, such as facial age estimation, this year alone.”
The company further detailed its strict safety defaults for users under 13. This includes preventing direct messaging outside of games or experiences and restricting direct messaging during gameplay unless parental controls are specifically altered. Roblox also highlighted its “rigorous text chat filters” designed to block inappropriate language, attempts to direct minors off the platform, and the sharing of personal information. The platform explicitly prohibits user-to-user image sharing and sexual conversations.
The Path Forward
Attorney General Coleman clarified that the objective of the lawsuit is not to shut down the platform but to ensure its safety. “Our goal is for Roblox to be safe,” he affirmed. The lawsuit seeks penalties of up to $2,000 for each violation of Kentucky’s Consumer Protection Act, and Coleman’s office remains open to negotiating a settlement with the company. Roblox, for its part, has expressed a shared goal of online safety for children and welcomed discussions with Coleman’s office to provide a clear understanding of its ongoing safety initiatives.
