Verizon and AST SpaceMobile Forge Groundbreaking Partnership for Space-Based Cellular Broadband
NEW YORK – In a significant move set to redefine cellular connectivity, telecom giant Verizon has finalized an agreement with AST SpaceMobile to launch space-based cellular broadband services beginning next year. This collaboration is poised to extend Verizon’s network reach to vast, previously unconnected areas across the United States.
Market Reacts Positively to Satellite-to-Cell Technology
The announcement sent ripples through the market, with shares of AST SpaceMobile, a pioneer in satellite-to-cell technology, surging by more than 10% in pre-market trading on Wednesday. Investors reacted positively to the prospect of a widespread space-based cellular network.
Innovative Network Architecture for Broad Compatibility
AST SpaceMobile’s innovative network architecture is designed for broad compatibility, leveraging premium low-band spectrum, alongside its own licensed L-band and S-band frequencies. Crucially, it can also integrate with up to an impressive 1,150 MHz of mobile network operator partners’ low- and mid-band spectrum globally.
Bridging the Digital Divide
Abel Avellan, founder, chairman, and CEO of AST SpaceMobile, highlighted the strategic importance of the deal, stating, “The agreement will extend the scope of Verizon’s 850 MHz premium low-band spectrum into areas of the U.S. that would benefit from the ubiquitous reach of space-based broadband technology.” This extension promises to bridge the digital divide for millions residing in rural and remote locations where traditional ground-based infrastructure is challenging or uneconomical to deploy.
A Future of Ubiquitous Connectivity
While the financial specifics of this expanded partnership, which builds upon an initial strategic collaboration announced in early 2024, were not disclosed, both companies expressed enthusiasm for the future of ubiquitous connectivity. Srini Kalapala, Verizon’s senior vice president of technology and product development, emphasized the transformative potential: “By integrating our expansive, reliable, robust terrestrial network with this innovative space-based technology, we are paving the way for a future where everything and everyone can be connected, regardless of geography.”
Leadership Transition at Verizon Underscores Innovation Push
This forward-looking partnership comes just two days after Verizon’s significant leadership transition. Dan Schulman, former CEO of PayPal and a Verizon board member since 2018, where he served as its lead independent director, was named the company’s new CEO. Schulman assumed his role immediately, succeeding Hans Vestberg. Vestberg will transition to a special adviser role until October 4, 2026, and will continue to serve on Verizon’s board until its 2026 annual meeting. This strategic leadership change underscores Verizon’s commitment to innovation and expansion in the rapidly evolving telecommunications landscape.
Pivotal Step Towards Universal Cellular Access
The deal between Verizon and AST SpaceMobile marks a pivotal step toward universal cellular access, promising enhanced communication capabilities for consumers and businesses alike, leveraging the power of space to connect the terrestrial.
