Grammy-Winning Musician Ike Turner Jr. Dies at 67, Adding to Family’s Recent Tragedies

Ike Turner Jr., Grammy-Winning Musician and Son of Music Legends, Dies at 67

Ike Turner Jr., the Grammy Award-winning musician and son of iconic rock and roll pioneers Tina Turner and Ike Turner, has passed away at the age of 67. His death, which occurred on May 26, 2023, at a Los Angeles hospital, was attributed to kidney failure, following a period of declining health that included severe heart issues and a recent stroke. The news was confirmed by family members, casting a further shadow of grief over the legendary Turner family, just months after the passing of his mother, Tina.

Jacqueline Bullock, Ike Jr.’s cousin who described him as a brother, informed TMZ of his passing and detailed his medical struggles. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of my cousin, Ike Turner, Jr.,” Bullock shared in a statement to Page Six. “Junior was more than a cousin to me, but rather a brother, as we grew up in the same famed household together.” His sister-in-law, Afida Turner, who was married to his late brother Ronnie, also shared an emotional tribute on Instagram, writing, “REST IN PEACE IKE JR : U WAS AMAZING BROTHER IN LAW I M GLAD I SPEAK WITH U ON A PHONE BEFORE U GONE LOVE U RIP 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻.”

A Life in Music: From Drums to Grammy Glory

Born into a family synonymous with groundbreaking music, Ike Turner Jr.’s own talents were evident from an early age. Bullock recounted his innate musicality: “As the son of Tina and Ike Turner, from an early age, his talents were evident as there wasn’t an instrument he did not want to play.” Though he initially favored the drums, his mother, Tina, encouraged him to explore other instruments by making him break down his drum kit after each practice, leading him to gravitate towards the keyboards. This diverse musical foundation propelled him into a successful career as a sought-after sound engineer and musician. He notably contributed to his father’s 2007 album, ‘Risin’ With The Blues,’ earning a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. Furthermore, Ike Jr. played a significant role in managing Bolic Sound Studios, the legendary recording facility founded by his father, Ike Turner, which was a hub for many classic recordings.

The Turner Family’s Enduring Legacy and Losses

Ike Turner Jr.’s life was intertwined with the complex and often tumultuous history of his famous parents. Tina Turner adopted Ike Jr. and his brother Michael, both sons from Ike Sr.’s previous marriage to Lorraine Taylor. Later, Tina and Ike Sr. welcomed their only biological child together, Ronnie Turner. Tina also had a son, Raymond Craig Hill, from an earlier relationship. The family has endured a series of profound losses in recent years.

His father, Ike Turner Sr., died in December 2007 at the age of 76 from a cocaine overdose. Tragically, Ike Jr. was preceded in death by his half-brother Craig, who died by suicide in July 2018 at 59, and his brother Ronnie, who passed away in December 2022 from complications related to colon cancer, four years after Craig’s death. Most recently, his mother, the incomparable Tina Turner, passed away in May 2023 at 83 after a long illness. Ike Jr.’s death adds another poignant chapter to the Turners’ storied and often challenging family narrative, leaving Michael as the sole surviving sibling among Tina’s children.

Ike Turner Jr.’s passing marks another somber moment for a family that gave the world unparalleled music but also faced immense personal struggles. His contributions as a musician and engineer, culminating in a Grammy win, secured his own place within the legacy of the Turner name, a legacy now tinged with repeated loss.
