These partnerships will see their extensive expertise and resources dedicated to the ambitious $500 billion “Stargate” project. Samsung and SK Hynix to Power AI with Advanced Memory Chips
At the core of these collaborations are Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, globally recognized as the two largest manufacturers of memory chips. Both companies have committed to significantly boosting their production of advanced semiconductor solutions to meet the escalating memory demands of OpenAI’s Stargate initiative. This commitment is vital for powering the immense computational needs of next-generation AI models and data centers. Stargate Korea and Innovative Floating Data Centers
Beyond chip manufacturing, OpenAI has also forged agreements with SK Telecom, South Korea’s leading wireless carrier. These discussions are focused on the feasibility of establishing an AI data center within South Korea, provisionally named “Stargate Korea.” Furthermore, various Samsung affiliates, including Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries, are poised to collaborate with OpenAI on cutting-edge data center technologies. A particularly innovative aspect of these partnerships is the joint commitment to develop floating data centers. This pioneering concept offers distinct advantages over traditional land-based facilities, such as alleviating land scarcity pressures, significantly reducing cooling costs due to natural water bodies, and contributing to lower carbon emissions.
The Colossal Scale of the Stargate Project
The Stargate project itself represents a colossal undertaking, a joint venture that also includes global players like SoftBank and Oracle, and notably backed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. With a staggering investment commitment of up to $500 billion, the project is designed to vastly expand the computing infrastructure required for the ongoing development and deployment of sophisticated AI products. OpenAI recently unveiled plans for its U.S. data center network, commencing with a flagship facility in Texas. This will be complemented by five additional major data center complexes across the United States, including two more in Texas, one in New Mexico, one in Ohio, and another at an undisclosed Midwest location, underscoring the expansive scale of Stargate’s foundational build-out.
