Lexi Reed’s Inspiring Journey: Embracing Scars and Self-Love in a Swimsuit
In a poignant display of resilience and self-acceptance, fitness influencer Lexi Reed, 34, has captured hearts and headlines with a powerful Instagram video, showcasing herself confidently in a swimsuit. The post marks a significant milestone in her extraordinary health journey, which includes a dramatic 300-pound weight loss and a harrowing battle with the rare and debilitating disease, calciphylaxis. Reed’s message, shared just before summer, titled “Scars, Skin, Self Love & Swimsuits,” resonates deeply with her millions of followers, declaring a reclaiming of her power.

A Challenging Path to Transformation
Reed’s path to this moment has been anything but easy. She embarked on her transformative weight loss journey from an initial weight of 485 pounds, ultimately shedding over 300 pounds. This monumental achievement, however, came with its own set of physical and emotional challenges, including significant loose skin. She recounts heartbreaking moments, such as being told by a family member to cover up her legs due to excess skin after finally daring to try on bathing suits in a non-plus-size dressing room. At her heaviest, the stares from strangers had already driven her to avoid public swimming altogether, covering herself despite the joy swimming brought her.
Battling Calciphylaxis
The journey took an unexpected and life-threatening turn when Reed was diagnosed with calciphylaxis, a rare condition where calcium accumulates in the small blood vessels of fat and skin tissues, leading to painful skin lesions and tissue death. This diagnosis followed severe kidney failure, which necessitated a medically induced coma. The disease left her with over 30 open wounds, rendering her unable to participate in simple pleasures like swimming. For 59 weeks, she endured intensive treatment, including multiple weekly intravenous infusions of sodium thiosulfate, a grueling regimen aimed at combating the devastating effects of the condition.
Emergence and Resilience
Remarkably, Lexi Reed has emerged from this ordeal stronger. Last year, she celebrated one year since her last infusion, marking a significant victory in her remission. Having once dropped to under 200 pounds on Christmas Day 2023, she faced a setback, regaining 90 pounds during her calciphylaxis treatment. Undeterred, she diligently worked to regain control of her health, proudly announcing in February 2024 that she had reached a new goal weight of 185 pounds.
A Message of Self-Love and Empowerment
The Instagram video, where she confidently poses in a blue one-piece swimsuit, kissing her arm in a gesture of self-love, is more than just a picture; it’s a testament to her triumph. “This summer I’m taking my power back & I refuse to hide my body, take it for granted, or not wear the swimsuits!” Reed passionately wrote in her caption. “This summer I’m taking my power back, loving myself, being grateful I’m capable to go swimming again since I’m in remission & making the memories. Skin is skin (especially in the grand scheme of so many other things)! Speak kindly to yourself because you’re always listening! ♥️”
Her message extends beyond her personal experience, offering universal encouragement: “As someone who was once 485 pounds that has loose skin, varicose veins, calcium deposits and scars…this is your reminder to wear the suit, and all bodies, are beach bodies.” Reed’s unwavering commitment to transparency and self-love continues to inspire countless individuals grappling with body image issues and chronic health battles, proving that true power lies in embracing one’s journey, scars and all.
