Aaron Sorkin to Revisit Meta Controversies in “The Social Reckoning”
LOS ANGELES, CA — Esteemed screenwriter and director Aaron Sorkin is set to revisit the complex world of Meta (formerly Facebook) with a new film titled “The Social Reckoning.” The project, announced by Sony Pictures, is described as a “companion piece” to his critically acclaimed 2010 hit, “The Social Network,” and will feature an all-star cast tackling the platform’s more recent controversies.
All-Star Cast Takes on Key Roles
Leading the cast is Emmy-winning actor Jeremy Strong, known for his intense performances in “Succession” and the upcoming “The Apprentice,” who will embody Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Joining him will be Mikey Madison, fresh off her Best Actress win at the Cannes Film Festival for “Anora,” in the pivotal role of Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen. “The Bear” star Jeremy Allen White is also attached, portraying then-Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, who played a central role in bringing Haugen’s revelations to light. Comedian and actor Bill Burr has been cast in an as-yet-unspecified role.
Shifting Focus: From Founding to Scandal
“The Social Reckoning” shifts its focus from Facebook’s contentious founding, depicted in “The Social Network,” to the explosive 2021 scandal ignited by Haugen. A former Facebook data scientist, Haugen leaked tens of thousands of internal company documents to The Wall Street Journal, forming the basis of “The Facebook Files” investigation. These damning documents alleged that Facebook leadership was aware of the detrimental impacts of its platforms on teenage mental health, the spread of misinformation, and political polarization, yet consistently prioritized profit over user safety. Haugen’s subsequent testimony before the U.S. Congress and European Parliament sent shockwaves through the tech industry and prompted widespread calls for greater regulation.
Sorkin Returns to Write and Direct
Sorkin, who penned the Oscar-winning screenplay for “The Social Network” – a film that garnered eight Academy Award nominations, winning three, and grossed over $226 million globally – will both write and direct this new endeavor. While Jesse Eisenberg famously portrayed a younger Zuckerberg in the David Fincher-directed original, Strong’s casting signals a deeper dive into the tech mogul’s persona amidst escalating public scrutiny.
Anticipated Theatrical Release in 2026
Sony Pictures plans a theatrical release for “The Social Reckoning” in October 2026, setting the stage for a timely cinematic examination of corporate responsibility, ethical dilemmas in the digital age, and the profound societal impact of social media giants.
