The Private World of Tom Ford: Fashion, Fatherhood, and Family

Fashion icon and acclaimed film director Tom Ford, a towering figure who has ascended to the pinnacle of the global fashion industry, cultivates a fiercely private personal life, especially concerning his now 13-year-old son, Alexander John Buckley Ford. Born via surrogate on September 23, 2012, in Los Angeles, Jack, as he is affectionately known, is the beloved child of Ford and his late husband, renowned fashion editor Richard Buckley.

A Love Story Spanning Decades

The foundation of Jack’s upbringing was a love story that began in 1986, when Ford and Buckley first met. Their relationship, enduring for 35 years, blossomed into marriage in a private ceremony in 2014. Buckley, a celebrated journalist and Ford’s steadfast partner, was an unwavering admirer of his husband’s exacting vision. In a poignant posthumous column published in ‘Air Mail,’ Buckley lauded Ford’s unparalleled attention to detail and commanding presence: “He sees everything, down to the last detail. I’ve actually never known anyone else with the ability to be so observant or precise. Nothing gets by him… he wouldn’t be where he is today if he wasn’t unyieldingly in command.”

A Vow of Privacy Fulfilled

Ford’s dedication to shielding his son from the glare of public scrutiny dates back years before Jack’s birth. In a 2011 interview with Time Out Hong Kong, Ford articulated his clear stance: “If I have children, no one will know about it until the child is born. And no one will ever see the child because I certainly wouldn’t use it as a press tool.” He further committed, “If I have a child, you won’t notice that I had a child. Maybe you’ll see it when it’s 18, but I will keep it out of the spotlight.” True to his word, Jack’s life has been meticulously kept away from the paparazzi and public eye, a rare feat in the world of celebrity offspring.

A Hands-On Approach to Fatherhood

Despite his extraordinarily demanding career, Ford has embraced fatherhood with a hands-on approach. Before Buckley’s passing, their mornings were a cherished family routine. Ford shared with Vogue’s André Leon Talley his commitment: “I feed him in the morning, I change his diaper, I dress him, I play with him, and I have a good two-to-three hours before I go to the office, just me and Jack.” He emphasized, “I didn’t have a child because I wanted to hand him off to somebody, I had a child because I’ve always wanted a child.”

The devastating loss of Richard Buckley profoundly shifted this established rhythm. “It’s been hard after 35 years, very hard,” Ford confessed to The Wall Street Journal, describing the challenges of adjusting to single parenthood. “Until recently, I had Richard to help me out in the mornings. It’s been a little bit of a struggle the last month because he would normally get [Jack’s] breakfast on school days while I was getting dressed.” Ford, adapting to his new role, added, “I’ve gotten pretty good at it, but it’s a challenge to get him up, dressed, get his lunch made, get his lunch packed, get his breakfast done, get all my things done, and then I drive him to school at 7:45.”

Growing Up with a Designer’s Eye

Unlike his father, who was born in Austin, Texas, and spent significant time in New York City, Jack is being raised entirely in the bustling metropolis of Los Angeles. As the son of one of the world’s most influential designers, it’s perhaps no surprise that Jack’s personal style is also under his father’s discerning eye. Ford revealed to The Wall Street Journal his firm sartorial guidelines for Jack: “You’re never wearing shorts to school. Don’t ask again. Not happening. When you turn 18, you can wear whatever you want.” While traditionally “formal” and “old-fashioned” in his own tastes, Ford recently made a concession, allowing Jack to wear graphic T-shirts, showcasing a touch of parental flexibility within his strict aesthetic code.
