Flavor Flav Shares Sobriety Journey Update at BMAC Gala: “I’m Back On Track”
Beverly Hills, CA – Hip-hop icon Flavor Flav, born William Jonathan Drayton Jr., offered a candid update on his ongoing sobriety journey during an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE at the 2025 Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) Gala in Beverly Hills on September 18. The 66-year-old Public Enemy co-founder, known for his distinctive clock necklace and vibrant personality, revealed he is “back on track” following a brief relapse in April, reaffirming his dedication to a drug-free life.

The rapper publicly disclosed his setback on April 3 via his Instagram Stories, a move he explained was driven by a desire for “public accountability.” At the time, Flav had maintained an impressive 4.5 years of continuous sobriety, a significant milestone that began in 2020. In his heartfelt post, he acknowledged the difficulty of the journey, writing, “Just when you think it’s easy, it ain’t. I briefly relapsed. I say this to admit my mistake and publicly hold myself accountable. I am a human being who makes mistakes and it doesn’t make me a bad person.” He emphasized his return to “Day 1,” a testament to the cyclical nature of recovery.

Now, just months later, Flavor Flav radiates renewed determination. “Right now it’s going very well. I’m back on point. I’m back on track. You know what I’m saying? And this is the way that I plan on staying for the rest of my life,” he confidently told PEOPLE. His message to others battling addiction is one of unyielding perseverance: “If you take a fall, don’t lay there and stay stuck… You got to get up off of that fall and you have to K-I-M — keep it moving. Operation no choice is now in progress. Either you keep it moving, or you stay stuck. And the name of the game is to keep it moving.” This philosophy underscores a crucial aspect of sustained recovery: the relentless pursuit of progress despite setbacks.
Flav’s journey into sobriety in 2020 marked a stark turning point from a life severely impacted by substance abuse. In a revealing 2023 appearance on the “Off the Record with DJ Akademiks” podcast, he confessed to spending a staggering “$2,400 to $2,600 a day… for six years straight” on drugs before his sobriety. Despite this profound addiction, he noted he “largely kept his drug use hidden” and maintained a façade of normalcy. His survival, he believes, is divine intervention. “I guess God wanted me to live,” he stated on the podcast. “And he knows that I’m a mouthpiece to the world. So, I feel that God let me live through that, so that way, I could teach people about the mistakes that I made. And hopefully, they won’t make them later on in life.”
Beyond sharing his personal battles, Flavor Flav has emerged as a vocal advocate for mental health awareness. In October 2024, commemorating his four-year sobriety anniversary, he underscored the critical link between mental well-being and recovery. To mark the occasion, he offered to cover the cost of therapy app subscriptions for a day, actively supporting accessible mental health resources. His transparency and dedication to both sobriety and mental health continue to inspire countless individuals navigating similar challenges. His message at the BMAC Gala serves as a powerful reminder that the path to recovery, though fraught with challenges, is always one worth pursuing with unwavering commitment.
