Novo Nordisk Announces Global Job Cuts Amid Strategic Restructuring

Copenhagen, Denmark — Pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk, the Danish powerhouse behind the highly sought-after weight-loss drug Wegovy and diabetes medication Ozempic, announced a significant restructuring on Wednesday, detailing plans to cut 9,000 jobs globally. This drastic measure, affecting approximately 11% of its 78,400-strong global workforce, includes 5,000 positions in its home country of Denmark.

Strategic Overhaul for Growth

The company, headquartered in Bagsvaerd, just outside Copenhagen, stated the job reductions are aimed at “strengthening the company’s focus on growth opportunities in obesity and diabetes medications.” The strategic overhaul is designed to streamline operations, reduce organizational complexity, and accelerate decision-making processes as Novo Nordisk navigates an increasingly competitive landscape for obesity treatments.

The restructuring is projected to yield substantial savings of 8 billion Danish krone (approximately $1.25 billion) by the end of 2026. These savings are slated for immediate reinvestment into core areas: research and development for both diabetes and obesity treatments. Both Wegovy and Ozempic owe their efficacy to the same active ingredient, semaglutide, which has revolutionized the treatment of these conditions.

CEO Emphasizes Evolving Market Dynamics

Mike Doustdar, who assumed the role of President and CEO in May, emphasized the evolving market dynamics. “Our markets are evolving, particularly in obesity, as it has become more competitive and consumer-driven,” Doustdar stated. “Our company must evolve as well. This means instilling an increased performance-based culture, deploying our resources ever more effectively, and prioritizing investment where it will have the most impact — behind our leading therapy areas.”

Doustdar’s appointment followed the departure of his predecessor, Lars Fruergaard Jorgensen, amid a period of falling share prices and mounting competition, notably from rival pharmaceutical firm Eli Lilly. Despite recent challenges, Novo Nordisk has experienced unprecedented growth, particularly following the launch of Wegovy and Ozempic. At its peak, the company’s market capitalization remarkably surpassed Denmark’s entire annual gross domestic product, cementing its status as Europe’s most valuable company.

Implementation Details

The implementation of these job cuts is set to commence immediately, with affected employees to be notified over the coming months in accordance with local labor regulations.
