From Hollywood Hills to the English Countryside: Inside the Couple’s Two-Decade Real Estate Goldmine

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have quietly built a formidable real estate empire, reportedly raking in an astonishing $190 million in profits over the past two decades. A Sept. 4 report from The Wall Street Journal sheds light on the power couple’s lucrative “house-flipping” endeavors, a venture driven by DeGeneres’s profound passion for architecture and design.

Since the mid-2000s, DeGeneres, 67, and de Rossi, 52, have cemented their reputation as astute property investors. The Journal tracked at least 34 homes bought and sold by the couple, primarily across California’s most exclusive enclaves, including Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, and Montecito. However, their business manager, Harley Neuman, who has worked closely with them for years, believes the true number of properties they’ve transacted is closer to 50, indicating an even more prolific involvement in the high-stakes real estate market.

The financial gains from these transactions are substantial. The Journal’s analysis indicates that the couple has generated approximately $190 million in profit, averaging a remarkable 37% return on each sale. This figure, however, is a gross profit. Neuman notes that factoring in the considerable costs of extensive renovations, contractor fees, designer services, and other expenditures typically associated with luxury home overhauls would adjust the net profit downwards. “It takes a village,” Neuman remarked, highlighting the complex and costly process behind transforming these properties. He also pointed out that DeGeneres often includes furniture in the sale, further adding to the initial investment that isn’t always accounted for in the raw profit margins. “She takes the art off the walls, but everything else gets sold,” he clarified.

DeGeneres herself admits to losing count of their many acquisitions and dispositions. Her motivation, she explains, stems not from boredom but from a deep-seated enthusiasm for architectural styles and interior design. “It’s not that I get bored, I’m just so passionate about architecture and furniture, and you can only buy a certain type of furniture for a contemporary house or a midcentury house,” she told The Wall Street Journal in a phone interview. This passion fuels a dynamic strategy where some properties are held for years, meticulously curated and renovated, while others are turned over in a matter of months.

The “Ellen house” phenomenon has even created its own market allure. Rayni Williams of Beverly Hills Estates, a realtor who represented a Hollywood executive purchasing one of their Montecito residences, attests to the added value. “Once somebody knows it’s her house or she had a hand in it, it adds value,” Williams stated, adding, “In L.A., she is synonymous with quality.” This reputation has attracted a roster of celebrity buyers, with famous names like Will Ferrell, Ariana Grande, and the late Heath Ledger reportedly acquiring homes once owned by the couple. DeGeneres often maintains a personal connection to these properties, observing with a mix of fondness and regret, “Every house I’ve sold, I kind of know everyone that’s bought the house. I go back and everything is the same, all the objects are the same. It is a compliment but it’s also like I’m an idiot [for selling.]”

More recently, DeGeneres and de Rossi have expanded their real estate ventures across the Atlantic. Following their relocation to the United Kingdom in 2024, they began investing in the English property market, particularly in the picturesque Cotswolds.

The couple arriving at RH England, The Gallery, an event reflecting their growing presence in the English countryside, sometimes called the “Heart of England”.

In July, they listed their stunning Kitesbridge Farm for approximately $30 million, having purchased it for around $20 million in the spring of 2024. DeGeneres revealed she invested roughly $9 million into the property before deciding to make their U.K. stay permanent, prompting a search for larger estates to accommodate de Rossi’s horses. While they plan to continue buying and renovating English homes, their pace might soon temper as DeGeneres anticipates a return to her entertainment career. “I think I’m going to work again, so I’m looking at how much time I’m going to have,” she concluded. Their journey from Hollywood Hills mansions to sprawling English farmhouses underscores a sophisticated and hugely profitable approach to real estate, driven by personal passion and a keen eye for design and value.
