Koch Family Acquires 10% Stake in New York Giants, Valuing Franchise at Record $10 Billion
A New Era for Giants Ownership
In a significant move reshaping the landscape of professional sports ownership, the ultra-wealthy Koch family has reached an agreement to purchase a 10% non-controlling stake in the NFL’s storied New York Giants. The deal, first reported by Bloomberg and confirmed by a person familiar with the transaction, values the franchise at an eye-watering $10 billion, an unprecedented figure for a North American professional sports team.
The agreement, spearheaded by Julia Koch, the widow of industrialist David Koch, marks a substantial entry for one of America’s most prominent and affluent families into the National Football League. The acquisition, however, is contingent upon approval from NFL owners, a decision that could be finalized as early as their next scheduled meeting in October.
The Mara and Tisch Families’ Strategic Move
The Mara and Tisch families, who have jointly owned the Giants for decades, initiated the process of exploring a minority, non-controlling stake sale in February. To facilitate this complex transaction, they enlisted the expertise of Moelis & Co., a global investment bank, as their financial advisor.
Julia Koch: A Growing Presence in Sports
Julia Koch, with a staggering net worth estimated by Forbes at $81.2 billion, is a pivotal figure in this landmark deal. Her vast wealth stems from her inheritance of Koch Industries, the second-largest private company in the United States, with diverse interests spanning chemicals, refining, pipelines, forest and consumer products, and more. This isn’t her first foray into sports ownership; last year, she and her family acquired a 15% stake in BSE Global, the parent company of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets and the WNBA’s New York Liberty, signaling a growing interest in top-tier sports investments.
Record-Breaking Valuation for an NFL Franchise
The $10 billion valuation for the New York Giants sets a new benchmark in the sports world, significantly eclipsing the previous record for a North American professional sports franchise. That record was established in 2023 when a group led by Josh Harris acquired the NFL’s Washington Commanders from former owner Dan Snyder for $6.05 billion. The Giants’ valuation underscores the immense and continually appreciating value of NFL franchises, which remain among the most profitable and sought-after assets globally.
Continuity in Leadership
The Mara family has held a deep and enduring connection to the New York Giants, owning the franchise since its inception in 1925. John Mara currently serves as the team’s president and CEO. Both the Mara and Tisch families will maintain their roles as majority owners, retaining controlling interest in the team, ensuring continuity in leadership and operations despite the new minority investment. A spokesperson for Julia Koch declined to comment on the deal when contacted on Thursday night.
