Nestlé Dismisses CEO Laurent Freixe Over Undisclosed Relationship with Subordinate

Nestlé CEO Laurent Freixe Dismissed Over Undeclared Relationship; Philipp Navratil Takes Helm

Swiss food giant Nestlé announced Monday, August 28, 2028, the immediate dismissal of its Chief Executive Officer, Laurent Freixe, following an internal investigation into an undisclosed romantic relationship with a direct subordinate. The world’s largest food company stated that the relationship constituted a violation of its stringent code of conduct, which governs the ethical behavior of its employees globally.

Immediate Succession and Corporate Integrity

Freixe, who had served as CEO for just under a year, having assumed the role on September 1, 2024, was replaced without delay by Philipp Navratil, a seasoned Nestlé executive. Chairman Paul Bulcke underscored the gravity of the decision in a statement released by the company. “This was a necessary decision. Nestlé’s values and governance are strong foundations of our company,” Bulcke asserted, emphasizing the importance of upholding corporate integrity. Nestlé, headquartered in Vevey, Switzerland, refrained from disclosing further specific details regarding the investigation or the identity of the subordinate involved.

An Unexpected End to a Long Career

The abrupt departure marks an unexpected end to Freixe’s extensive 42-year career with the multinational corporation. Having joined Nestlé in 1986, Freixe steadily ascended through various leadership roles across global markets, demonstrating a deep understanding of the company’s diverse operations. Notably, he was appointed CEO of Zone Latin America in January 2022, overseeing significant operations across a key growth region. His elevation to the company’s top leadership position was announced in August 2024, succeeding then-CEO Mark Schneider, highlighting his rapid ascent to the pinnacle of the organization.

Philipp Navratil: A Profile of the New CEO

His successor, Philipp Navratil, brings over two decades of dedicated experience to the CEO role. Navratil began his journey with Nestlé in 2001 as an internal auditor, subsequently holding diverse positions, particularly in Central America, gaining valuable insights into market dynamics and financial oversight. By 2020, he had joined Nestlé’s pivotal Coffee Strategic Business Unit, contributing to the success of one of the company’s most iconic categories. Earlier this year, in 2024, he was appointed CEO of the premium Nespresso division, a role that positioned him at the helm of a high-value, innovation-driven segment of the business, demonstrating his strong track record within the company’s high-growth segments.

Broader Leadership Transitions at Nestlé

Freixe’s dismissal is the latest in a series of significant leadership changes at Nestlé. In June, Chairman Paul Bulcke, who has presided over the board since 2017 and previously served as CEO, announced he would not seek re-election in 2026, signaling a forthcoming shift in board leadership. Prior to that, in April, Steve Presley, an executive vice president and CEO of Zone Americas, also declared his retirement after nearly 30 years of dedicated service to the company. These consecutive changes signal a period of considerable transition within Nestlé’s upper echelons, prompting close observation from industry analysts.

Navigating Global Economic Headwinds

These internal shifts occur as Nestlé navigates a challenging global economic landscape. Like many major food manufacturers, the company has been grappling with persistent headwinds, including escalating commodity costs for essential ingredients such as coffee and cocoa, as well as the impact of international tariffs that complicate global trade. In July, Nestlé reported that it had managed to offset these rising costs through strategic price increases across its diverse product portfolio, which includes popular brands such as Nescafé beverages and Purina pet food, demonstrating its ability to adapt to market pressures while maintaining profitability.
