Legendary rapper Snoop Dogg, 53, has issued a clarification regarding his recent comments on LGBTQ+ representation in children’s animated films, specifically referencing a scene in Disney and Pixar’s 2022 release, Lightyear. The artist, a grandfather of seven, initially expressed discomfort and a lack of preparedness to discuss such themes with his 6-year-old grandson, sparking a wave of public scrutiny.

The Initial Remarks and Podcast Fallout

The controversy began following an August 20 episode of the “It’s Giving” podcast, where Snoop Dogg shared his experience watching Lightyear with one of his grandsons. He recounted a moment where his grandson, observing a family with two mothers, directly questioned him: “Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She a woman!”

Snoop Dogg admitted to being caught off guard, telling his grandson to “keep watching” while privately lamenting, “I didn’t come here for this s—. I just came to watch the goddamn movie.” He further elaborated on the podcast, stating, “It’s like, I’m scared to go to the movies now. Y’all throwing me in the middle of s— that I don’t have an answer for.” His remarks included questions like, “We have to show that at this age?” and a broader observation that “they’re putting it everywhere,” seemingly referring to LGBTQ+ themes in children’s content. These statements quickly drew criticism from various corners of social media and the entertainment industry.

The ‘Lightyear’ Scene and its Broader Context

The specific scene in question from Lightyear features the character Alisha Hawthorne, a female space ranger, who is shown to have a wife. Their relationship is briefly depicted, including a kiss, and later they are seen welcoming a baby son. This particular inclusion has been a point of contention since the film’s release.

Globally, the scene led to the film being banned in over a dozen countries, predominantly in the Middle East and Asia, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Malaysia. Domestically, at least one movie theater in Oklahoma explicitly posted warnings and offered to fast-forward through the scene for patrons.

Interestingly, the same-sex kiss was initially cut from the film during production but was later reinstated by Disney and Pixar. This decision, reported by Variety, came amid significant internal backlash from staff against former Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s handling of Florida’s controversial “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Prominent voices, including Lightyear cast members Uzo Aduba and Chris Evans, publicly championed the reinstatement of the scene, highlighting its importance for representation.

Snoop Dogg’s Public Clarification

A week after his podcast comments went viral, on August 27, Snoop Dogg took to Instagram to clarify his position. In a comment on a Hollywood Unlocked post discussing his initial remarks, the prolific artist stated, “I was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons.”

He further elaborated on his personal connections and ongoing learning, writing, “all my gay friends [know] what’s up” and have “been calling me with love 💗.” Snoop Dogg concluded his statement with an acknowledgment of his own fallibility and a willingness to learn: “My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6 yr old 😳. Teach me how to learn I’m not perfect 🙌🏿🙏🏾🐾.”

While a representative for Snoop Dogg has not yet responded to further requests for comment, his Instagram message serves as a public attempt to address the criticism and provide context to his initial, unscripted reactions to a rapidly evolving cultural landscape in children’s entertainment.
