Long-Awaited Revival of Beloved 90s Sitcom Scrapped as Studio Declines Rights Transfer
Hollywood, CA – Fans eagerly awaiting a return to the world of *Blossom* will be left wanting, as star Mayim Bialik has officially confirmed that a planned reboot of the beloved 1990s sitcom has been definitively canceled by Disney. The actress, 49, revealed the news in a Substack post shared on Monday, August 25, detailing a years-long effort to bring the character of Blossom Russo back to screens.
Bialik and *Blossom* series creator Don Reo initially approached Disney, the current owner of the show’s intellectual property, with the concept of a revival. The original series, which aired on NBC from 1991 to 1995 (following a pilot in 1990), centered on Blossom Russo (Bialik), an Italian-American teenager navigating adolescence in a male-dominated household with her single father and older brothers, Joey Lawrence and Michael Stoyanov, after her mother left to pursue her own career. The show resonated with audiences for its exploration of relatable teenage issues and quirky style.
Their first discussions with Disney occurred at a challenging time for Bialik, who was then balancing her burgeoning role on the sitcom *Call Me Kat* and her duties as co-host of *Jeopardy!* “We simply did not have the time to develop the show but tried to lock it in quickly,” Bialik wrote. Despite initial positive feedback from Disney executives, who “seemed to love it, understood what we wanted to do,” time constraints prevented rapid progress. This early enthusiasm had even led Bialik and Reo to speak about the potential reboot publicly, fueling fan hopes.
After completing three seasons of *Call Me Kat* and two seasons co-hosting *Jeopardy!*, both ending recently, Bialik and Reo reignited their passion for the *Blossom* revival. They re-pitched their vision to a new team at Disney, a move necessitated by a series of corporate mergers and industry shakeups within the media giant. However, this second attempt met a starkly different reception.
“Unfortunately, and for no particular reason, we were told ‘no,'” Bialik revealed, expressing clear frustration. Adding to their disappointment, Disney also reportedly refused to hand over the rights to the series. Bialik and Reo had hoped to obtain these rights, allowing them to explore other production avenues and “let the market decide if audiences might want to see these characters all these years later.” This refusal leaves the future of any *Blossom* revival uncertain, trapped within Disney’s control.
Bialik candidly shared the personal impact of this outcome, stating that playing Blossom Russo is “the role I want to play more than any other.” The project’s collapse has even led to a decline in her “desire to continue to pursue on-camera roles.” Despite a highly successful career that includes her acclaimed role as Amy Farrah Fowler in *The Big Bang Theory*, Bialik firmly believes Disney’s decision was a misstep. “While it is possible no one wants a *Blossom* reboot, I’m certain Disney got this wrong,” she asserted.
As of now, the original *Blossom* series is not available on major streaming subscription services, although individual episodes can be purchased on platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, and YouTube. Disney has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding the situation.
