NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the United States’ largest public utility, has announced a landmark agreement to purchase clean energy from an upcoming advanced nuclear power plant. This pioneering deal is set to help power Google’s burgeoning data centers in Tennessee and Alabama, signaling a significant step in meeting the escalating energy demands of the digital economy.

Powering Google’s Digital Growth

Under the newly inked power purchase agreement (PPA), the TVA will procure up to 50 megawatts of electricity from the Hermes 2 reactor, currently under development by California-based Kairos Power. This energy will be integrated into the federal utility’s grid, directly supporting Google’s operations in Montgomery County, Tennessee, and Jackson County, Alabama, while also laying groundwork for future regional expansion. A key component of this collaboration is that Google will receive clean energy credits associated with the plant’s output.

The announcement arrives at a critical juncture as technology giants grapple with the immense power requirements of their data centers, particularly those fueling the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence. This growing energy footprint has intensified interest in stable, carbon-free power sources like nuclear energy. This trend is further amplified by recent political initiatives, including former President Donald Trump’s plans to boost AI infrastructure and his executive orders aimed at accelerating nuclear power development across the U.S.

Introducing the Hermes 2 Reactor

The Hermes 2 reactor, situated in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is slated to commence operations by 2030. Its significance lies in its innovative fluoride salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor technology, which utilizes molten salt as its primary coolant — a departure from conventional water-cooled reactors. It’s important to note that Hermes 2 is a distinct operational plant from the existing Hermes test reactor in Oak Ridge, which is designed for research and does not generate electricity.

Regulatory Progress and Fuel Innovation

The project is progressing through regulatory hurdles, having secured a construction permit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in November. The next crucial step involves obtaining an operating license from the NRC. A notable feature of Hermes 2, like many next-generation reactors, is its reliance on high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel. According to the Department of Energy, HALEU is enriched to a higher degree than traditional nuclear fuel, enabling reactors to operate longer, more efficiently, with a smaller physical footprint, and producing less waste. While HALEU production is currently limited in the United States, significant investments are underway to ramp up its domestic manufacturing, including efforts in Oak Ridge.

A Pivotal Step for Clean Energy

This agreement marks a pivotal moment for the TVA, as it becomes the first U.S. utility to enter a power purchase agreement specifically for a next-generation nuclear reactor. Furthermore, the Hermes 2 reactor is part of a broader strategic collaboration between Kairos Power and Google, aiming to introduce 500 megawatts of new, advanced nuclear power production to help meet Google’s expanding electricity needs. As the TVA continues to provide electricity to approximately 10 million people across seven southern states, this partnership underscores a forward-looking approach to sustainable energy solutions for the nation’s burgeoning digital landscape.
