A nearly decade-long friendship between global superstar Taylor Swift, 35, and acclaimed actress Blake Lively, 37, has reportedly been strained, with sources indicating the two are currently not speaking. The rift comes as Swift prepares to release her highly anticipated new album, The Life of a Showgirl, on October 3, which includes a track that has fans speculating about the nature of their relationship.
Their close bond, which began in 2014, has been a cornerstone of celebrity friendships. Swift is notably the godmother to Lively and husband Ryan Reynolds’ three daughters: James, Inez, and Betty. The Legal Entanglement

Swift’s involvement was first alleged in January when Baldoni’s legal team filed a complaint, since dismissed, claiming that Swift had pressured him to accept Lively’s script rewrites for the film. While that specific complaint was dismissed, the legal team later issued a subpoena to Swift in May. Swift’s representative vehemently denied the legitimacy of the subpoena, asserting it was “designed to use Taylor Swift’s name to draw public interest by creating tabloid clickbait instead of focusing on the facts of the case.” The subpoena was ultimately dropped.

The legal drama has taken a clear toll on their friendship. In April, sources close to the situation revealed to PEOPLE that Swift “was really hurt” by her unexpected implication in the case. By May, insiders confirmed the friendship had “halted,” with the pair “taking some space” from each other, though it was clarified they were “not no longer friends.” Despite efforts to reconcile, a source indicated two months later that while Lively and Swift were working toward being “on good terms,” their friendship “isn’t the same as it was before.” Currently, a source tells PEOPLE directly that “Taylor and Blake aren’t speaking.”

The tracklist includes a song titled “Ruin the Friendship,” which has immediately ignited fan speculation that it addresses her relationship with Lively. Swift revealed during a recent appearance on her boyfriend Travis Kelce’s podcast that she recorded the entire album during the successful European leg of her Eras Tour, notably before she became embroiled in the It Ends With Us legal controversy.
