Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Unveils Four Major New Investments

Warren Buffett speaking

OMAHA, Neb. – Berkshire Hathaway, the expansive conglomerate led by the legendary investor Warren Buffett, has officially announced four significant new investments in its latest regulatory filing. The disclosure, made public via a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing on Thursday, revealed fresh stakes in healthcare giant UnitedHealth, steel producer Nucor, and two of the nation’s largest homebuilders, Lennar and D.R. Horton. These additions mark a notable expansion of Berkshire’s formidable $258 billion investment portfolio.

UnitedHealth: A Potential Direct Move by Buffett

Among the newly disclosed holdings, Berkshire Hathaway’s investment in UnitedHealth stands out, potentially signaling a direct move by Buffett himself. The stake in the healthcare behemoth was valued at a robust $1.57 billion at the end of the second quarter, comfortably exceeding Buffett’s reported minimum investment threshold. This substantial acquisition saw Berkshire purchase nearly 5 million UnitedHealth shares during the second quarter alone, a move that sent UnitedHealth’s stock soaring by nearly 8% in after-hours trading following the announcement.

Diversifying Holdings: Steel and Homebuilding

The other three investments, while substantial, fall below the $1 billion mark, suggesting they may have been managed by Berkshire’s other highly capable investment deputies, Ted Weschler or Todd Combs, who also serves as CEO of Geico. Berkshire had previously secured permission from the SEC to temporarily keep these smaller stakes confidential earlier in the year as it accumulated its positions.

  • Nucor: Berkshire’s new stake in steelmaker Nucor comprises 6.6 million shares, valued at approximately $857 million at the close of the second quarter. This news spurred a positive reaction from the market, with Nucor shares climbing more than 6% in extended after-hours trading.
  • Lennar & D.R. Horton: In the housing sector, Berkshire acquired a position in Lennar worth nearly $800 million. A smaller, yet significant, stake was also taken in D.R. Horton, valued at $191.5 million. Both homebuilding companies also experienced gains in late trading after the news broke. These investments indicate a renewed interest in the residential construction market, an area Warren Buffett is intimately familiar with through Berkshire’s ownership of Clayton Homes, the nation’s largest manufactured homebuilder.

Buffett’s Strategy and Investor Scrutiny

Investors worldwide eagerly scrutinize Berkshire’s quarterly SEC filings, seeking to glean insights from Buffett’s famously successful investment strategies. His decades-long record of consistently outperforming the S&P 500 index has cultivated a vast following. However, despite Berkshire’s immense cash reserves, which stood at an imposing $344 billion, Buffett has openly expressed the challenge of identifying suitable, large-scale investment opportunities in recent years, especially as he is poised to retire as CEO at the close of the year after an impressive six-decade tenure.

Beyond the Stock Portfolio

Beyond its stock portfolio, Berkshire Hathaway owns a diverse array of businesses spanning various industries, including insurance operations like Geico, the BNSF railway, several major utility companies, and a host of manufacturing and retail enterprises. Its holdings feature widely recognized brands such as See’s Candies and Dairy Queen, underscoring the conglomerate’s vast and varied economic footprint from its Omaha, Nebraska headquarters.
