Louisiana Sues Roblox, Alleges Platform is a Haven for Child Predators
BATON ROUGE, La. — In a significant move targeting one of the world’s most popular online gaming platforms, Louisiana has filed a lawsuit against Roblox, accusing the company of creating an environment where sexual predators can “thrive, unite, hunt and victimize kids.” The lawsuit, lodged in state court by Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill on Thursday, asserts that Roblox has demonstrably failed to implement adequate safety measures to safeguard its vast child user base from adult offenders.
Roblox’s “Virtual Universe” Under Scrutiny
Roblox, a free-to-play platform boasting over 111 million monthly active users globally, positions itself as “the ultimate virtual universe that lets you create, share experiences with friends, and be anything you can imagine.” However, Murrill contends that the company’s priorities lie squarely with “user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety,” leading to a platform “overrun with harmful content and child predators.”
Mounting Concerns and Disturbing Incidents
This legal action follows mounting national criticism and prior lawsuits against the multi-billion dollar enterprise concerning its alleged failure to protect minors. Just last month, a distressing lawsuit emerged from Iowa, detailing how a 13-year-old girl was allegedly introduced to an adult predator on the Roblox platform. This interaction reportedly led to her subsequent kidnapping, trafficking across multiple states, and rape — a chilling example of the dangers advocates say lurk within the digital world.
Locally, Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard has corroborated concerns, revealing that his office has investigated multiple cases linked to Roblox. In one instance, police allege a man utilized voice-altering technology to masquerade as a young girl on the platform, illustrating the sophisticated methods predators employ to bypass current safeguards. While investigations are ongoing, Ard noted that no arrests directly related to the gaming site have been made in these specific Livingston Parish cases.
Allegations of Insufficient Age Verification
A core tenet of Murrill’s complaint revolves around what she describes as Roblox’s “lack of age minimum or substantial age verification process.” Despite Roblox’s stated policy of a “zero-tolerance policy for the exploitation of minors,” and its guidelines preventing children under 13 from chatting with other users outside of games without explicit parental permission, the Attorney General argues that these measures are insufficient. Predators, she asserts, can readily bypass these checks, allowing adults to pose as children and engage with vulnerable users. While Roblox claims to monitor and moderate unencrypted private chat conversations, the lawsuit implies that these efforts are not robust enough to prevent illicit activity.
Roblox’s Recent Efforts to Enhance Safety
In response to increasing scrutiny and public outcry, Roblox has recently begun rolling out new features aimed at enhancing user safety. These include:
- An artificial intelligence (AI) system designed to detect early signs of potential child endangerment, including sexually exploitative language. Roblox reported that this AI system led to the submission of 1,200 reports of potential child exploitation attempts to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in the first half of 2025.
- A new age verification feature for teenagers aged 13 to 17, launched last month, requiring a video selfie to enable free chat with “trusted connections.”
The company’s website also indicates that broader age verification for all users “is a new feature that is currently in testing.”
Attorney General Calls for Shutdown
However, for Attorney General Murrill, these measures appear to be too little, too late. Her ultimate stance is unambiguous: she believes Roblox should be shut down entirely, underscoring the severity of the allegations and the perceived threat to children online. An email seeking comment from Roblox sent by AP on Thursday did not immediately receive a response.
