From Critics to Honorees: KISS Accepts Kennedy Center Award Under Trump’s Watch
The world of rock and politics converged dramatically this week as legendary rock band KISS, fronted by iconic members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, was announced as a recipient of the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors. The recognition comes amidst a notable shift in tone from the bandmates, who have historically been outspoken critics of former President Donald Trump, 79, who has recently taken a dominant role in the cultural institution’s selection process.
A Controversial Selection Process
On Wednesday, August 13, President Trump announced the 2024 class of Kennedy Center Honorees, including KISS, alongside other cultural luminaries such as actor Sylvester Stallone, musical theater star Michael Crawford, disco queen Gloria Gaynor, and country legend George Strait. The annual Kennedy Center Honors, established in 1978, are considered among the most esteemed awards in the performing arts, celebrating individuals for their lifetime contributions to American culture.
This year’s selection process saw a direct and unprecedented influence from the former President. Trump, who appointed himself chairman of the Kennedy Center in February, openly stated he was “about 98 percent involved” in choosing the honorees. He also remarked on his own past desire for the award, quipping, “I waited and waited and waited, and I said, ‘The hell with it. I’ll become chairman,’… ‘I’ll give myself an honor. Maybe… next year we’ll honor Trump.'” He further noted that he turned down candidates “who were too woke” during the selection.
KISS Expresses Gratitude Amidst Past Criticisms
Despite their well-documented past criticisms, KISS expressed profound gratitude. Speaking to TMZ, Paul Stanley, 73, stated the band was “deeply honored” by the recognition. “From our earliest days, KISS has embodied the American ideal that all things are possible and that hard work pays off,” Stanley asserted. “The prestige of the Kennedy Center Honors cannot be overstated and I accept this on behalf of the long legacy of KISS and all of the band members who helped create our iconic band.”
Paul Stanley’s Sharp Critiques
The acceptance marks a striking juxtaposition against the backdrop of Stanley’s previous sharp critiques of Trump. In August 2020, as the presidential election loomed, Stanley took to X (formerly Twitter) to denounce Trump’s claims of a rigged election should he lose. He wrote, “REGARDLESS of who you support, it is incendiary & abhorrent for ANY candidate to say ‘If I lose, the election is rigged.’ It’s an insult to those who have fought for the free, safe elections we have and dangerously implies that citizens who don’t share your views are the enemy.”
His condemnation intensified in January 2021 following the attack on the U.S. Capitol. Stanley posted a picture of the events on X, labelling the participants “TERRORISTS” and the incident “armed insurrection.” He directly implicated the then-President and “specific senators,” writing, “The flames were fanned today & over time by the president & specific senators who CANNOT be allowed now to distance from or denounce what they have directly caused. Know their names. THIS is the result of their deception. Shame.”
Gene Simmons’ Evolving Stance
Gene Simmons, 75, has also navigated a complex and evolving public stance on Trump. Initially, Simmons showed a degree of admiration for Trump’s political style. In 2008, he appeared on the first season of Trump’s reality show, Celebrity Apprentice. Years later, in a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone, Simmons lauded Trump as “good for the political system.” He described him as “the truest political animal I’ve ever seen onstage,” noting, “He has no speechwriters, no editing, no nothing. He’s actually on tape going ‘motherf—–‘. You cannot turn away.… He has said some very vile, unkind things. But don’t kid yourself. He speaks off the cuff, and what you see is what you get. And he’ll double down.” Simmons concluded at the time, “He’s not there to be your friend…. He’s good for the political system.”
However, Simmons’ perspective shifted considerably in the years that followed. By May 2022, speaking to SPIN, he had grown far more critical, famously likening Trump’s supporters to “cockroaches.” “Look what that gentleman [Trump] did to this country and the polarization — got all the cockroaches to rise to the top,” Simmons stated, adding, “I don’t think he’s a Republican or a Democrat. He’s out for himself, any way you can get there. And in the last election, over 70 million people bought it hook, line, and sinker.”
Further clarifying his disillusionment, Simmons reflected on Bill Maher’s podcast in November 2022 about Trump’s 2016 election. “I didn’t want Hillary [Clinton]. I thought, ‘Oh, a businessman is coming in. He understands how to run things,'” he recounted. But within “a year or two of that,” Simmons said, Trump was “not the person I saw.”
