Justice recounted that the initial “honeymoon state” swiftly gave way to a clash of expectations, particularly as he began contemplating fatherhood. “My knowledge and my understanding, my wisdom around relationships just wasn’t vast,” he admitted. Hailing from the Midwest, Justice explained his ingrained traditional views on marriage, where a wife would “cook, clean, [be] traditional.” This contrasted sharply with Berry’s burgeoning career and lifestyle. “At that time, as a young guy – she don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem like motherly, and then we start having issues,” Justice stated, highlighting the early friction points.

The couple, who first met in May 1992 and were engaged within five months, navigated significant professional demands that further strained their bond. “We spent a lot of time apart because she was doing movies in this country, that country,” Justice explained. He reflected that a lack of resources, specifically professional counseling, might have altered their trajectory. “If we knew about therapy, we probably could have made it,” he mused, adding that there were no “major issues” beyond these core differences and his own youth and limited relationship experience at the time. Justice ultimately decided to leave Berry in 1996, a year before their divorce was finalized. He later married Rebecca Villalobos Justice in 2001 and is now a father of three.
