Bridges, in a recent appearance on The Patrick LabyorSheaux podcast with Patrick Labyorteaux, recounted the surprising behind-the-scenes decision-making that brought the then-budding star Janet Jackson to the set of Diff’rent Strokes. As his character, Willis, matured and the show’s producers sought a love interest, Bridges, then a young teen, was given an unusual degree of input. He seized the opportunity to suggest a specific actress who had already captivated him on another popular sitcom.
“I was like, ‘That girl is gorgeous. I gotta get her phone number,’ ” Bridges recalled, referring to Janet Jackson, whom he had admired from her role as Penny Woods on Good Times. The groundbreaking CBS series, which aired from 1974 to 1979, was where Bridges first saw Jackson’s talent. After getting to know her off-screen, a young Bridges firmly advocated for her casting. “They’re like, ‘Really?’ I’m like, ‘Hire her. I want her or I’ll quit.’ And then they hired her and she became my girlfriend on the show.”
Janet Jackson joined the cast of Diff’rent Strokes, which ran from 1978 to 1986, making guest appearances as Charlene DuPrey in 10 episodes between 1980 and 1984. Beyond the camera, Bridges confirmed that the two teenage stars “dated for a little while.” He spoke warmly of their time together, stating, “It was fun. Janet’s the greatest person ever. We had such fun.”
Their romance, though brief, opened the door for Bridges into the inner circle of one of music’s most famous families. Meeting the Jackson brothers proved to be a daunting experience for the then 16-year-old actor. “When I started going out with her, I had to go to meet all her brothers and stuff,” Bridges explained. “And that wasn’t… for a 16-year-old boy, that is not fun. You know what I mean? You gotta meet the brother and they’re all like, giving you the eye.”
The most surreal encounter, however, was with Michael Jackson, particularly during the monumental recording of his 1982 album, Thriller. Bridges vividly recounted a visit to the Jackson family’s Havenhurst home, which was undergoing renovations at the time, leading the family to temporarily reside in nearby condos. It was there that Bridges witnessed a moment of pure musical genius.
“I remember being back there, we’re looking at something, and then Michael comes driving in and power slides around the car,” Bridges recalled. “And he jumps out and starts singing, ‘Because this is thriller’ inside. And I’m like, ‘What is he doing?’ She’s like, ‘Oh, he’s singing his new album.'” This spontaneous performance offered Bridges a rare glimpse into the creative process of an album that would go on to sell an estimated 70 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling album of all time.
Bridges also shared a humorous, yet terrifying, memory of driving with the pop icon. “I’ll tell you something, driving with Michael was scary,” he laughed. “The whole time in the car, I’m like, ‘Please don’t kill me.’ I was so afraid driving with Michael, man, because he drove wild.”
Despite Michael Jackson’s eccentricities behind the wheel, Bridges emphasized the stark contrast between his public persona and his private demeanor. “When Mike’s on stage, he was different. But in real life, he’s just a normal person,” he observed. “And same conversations, he has his likes, his dislikes, but he was probably the most talented person I ever met in my life.”
