Saquon Barkley, the celebrated running back for the Philadelphia Eagles, found himself at the center of a surprising political entanglement on Monday, August 4. His name unexpectedly appeared on a list of appointees to President Donald Trump’s National Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, prompting a swift clarification from the 28-year-old athlete who asserted he had previously declined an invitation to join the advisory body.
Speaking to reporters at Eagles training camp, Barkley explained that an inquiry about the council had been presented to his team “a couple months ago.” However, citing an anticipated demanding schedule, he and his family opted against accepting the role. “I felt like I am going to be super busy, so me and my family thought it would probably be in my best interest to not accept that,” Barkley elaborated. His astonishment was palpable, adding, “I was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned. I’m assuming it’s something great, so I appreciate it but was a little shocked when my name was mentioned.” The council itself was formally established following an executive order signed by President Trump on Thursday, July 31.

According to a White House press release, the commission’s broad mandate includes “creat[ing] school-based programs to reward excellence in physical education and support the development of a Presidential Fitness Award.” Furthermore, it is tasked with playing “an important role in restoring tradition to college athletics, including reforming the broken transfer portal and keeping men out of women’s sports,” addressing contentious debates surrounding collegiate sports and gender policy.

This unexpected development adds another layer to Barkley’s previous, publicly scrutinized interactions with President Trump. In April, specifically on April 27, 2025, the NFL’s last season’s rushing leader faced a barrage of criticism on social media after images circulated of him golfing with Trump at his Bedminster, N.J., golf club and subsequently boarding Air Force One. The backlash prompted Barkley to address his followers on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, April 28, urging them to “get out of my mentions with all this politics.” He defended his actions, stating, “Lol some people are really upset cause I played golf and flew to the White House with the PRESIDENT. Maybe I just respect the office, not a hard concept to understand. Just golfed with Obama not too long ago…and look forward to finishing my round with Trump!” This statement implied a non-partisan respect for the presidential office, rather than a political endorsement.
Adding to the narrative, Barkley was notably praised by President Trump later that same day in April during a visit by a portion of the Philadelphia Eagles to the White House. This visit was to celebrate their 2025 Super Bowl victory.
